VICKSBURG - For the second time in history, the state crowned an African-American Miss Mississippi.
Miss Heritage Kimberly Morgan will represent Mississippi at the Miss America pageant in January.
"I'm still trying to absorb it," said Morgan, a 24-year-old Oxford native who teaches music at Madison Shannon Palmer High School in Marks. "This is overwhelming."
It's a dream come true for the Alcorn State University graduate who said she's wanted to be Miss America since she was a chubby second-grader with a hearing problem.
Morgan got the nearly 2,500-person crowd to clap along with her at Saturday night's pageant as she sang Summertime.
