WHEN Mrs Singapore World Inderpal Kaur heads to Russia for the Mrs World pageant, she will be praying that scandal will be kept at bay.
The image of Mrs World pageants was tarnished with backbiting and allegations of rigging last year when it was held in the Russian city of St Petersburg.
First, 20 out of 54 beauty queens were denied visas into the country. Then, Mrs Costa Rica was crowned the winner by accident.
The ceremony had to be repeated with only 11 of the contestants on stage as the rest walked off in protest.
The tiara eventually went to 18-year-old Mrs Russia Sofia Arzhakovstaya. She was once married to one of the richest men in the country. This led to allegations that she got the title unfairly.
She won a US$6,000 ($9,200) fur coat and jewellery.
The annual Mrs World is the married woman's version of Miss World. It is based on the Mrs America beauty pageant and has been running since 1985, with a special emphasis on marriage and family.
This year's contest will be held from 21 Feb to 8 Mar at the Black Sea resort of Sochi.
Although a little worried after having heard of the debacle, Madam Kaur, 29, is armed and ready for anything.
She will be buying handphone pouches as souvenirs for her fellow contestants - to put Singapore and herself 'in the best possible light'.
Plus a 'helpful' world map.
'Some of these contestants would have never heard of Singapore or think we are somewhere in China,' she said.
