"It is a fact that Cancun is one of the cities that will host the annual beauty pageant during the month of May", added Rodriguez after holding a meeting with local authorities.
Rodriguez said that the main objective is to support the promotion of these locations and reactivate its economy. Cancun has not been able to equal the numbers of visitors it used to have previous to hurricane Wilma, which devastated the area in 2005. Meanwhile, Oaxaca was affected by a political crisis which included manifestations.
The promoter added that the realization of the event would require an investment of about 15 million dollars in production, promotion and fees; and he is confident that the pageant could increment the number of visitors in each venue for about a 20%.
"The event will be covered by hundreds of local and international journalists, and the contestants will arrive in Mexico a month before the finals. The TV coverage of the event reaches at least 150 countries" he added.
Mexico has been host of the Miss Universe pageant three times: 1978 (Acapulco, Guerrero), 1989 (Cancun, Quintana Roo) and 1993 (Mexico City, Mexico).
The reigning Nuestra Belleza Mexico, Rosa Maria Ojeda, is prepared to assume the duties of the host contestant and try to win a second Miss Universe crown for her country.
The Miss Universe 2007 finals are expected to take place on May 29th at the National Auditorium in Mexico City, with the contestants arriving around May 4th and 6th, according to local authorities.
During the month of May, the 90 contestants will visit and promote various tourism spots in Mexico, and participate in activities prior to the final contest, which include the National Costume competition, a Charity Auction, a Fashion Show, a Parade, and sponsor events. This year there will be a Beachwear round, which will take place in Cozumel; and the National Costume competition will be held at the Monte Alban ruins in Oaxaca. REFORMA
