Shandi Finnessey, Miss USA 2004, somehow found time in her busy schedule to be a key speaker at the third annual fund-raiser in Edwardsville Saturday for Allison's Friends of Hope for cancer research.
Since winning her title in 2004, Finnessey has spoken out to help raise funds for research in breast and ovarian cancer, helping to raise more than $30 million for the cause.
Finnessey said she is glad to use her celebrity status if it will help attract people to such important fund-raisers.
She also found time to read from her published children's book, "The Furrtails," to children at the Edwardsville Public Library on Saturday. The book demonstrates that even though people have different abilities, each is important in her or his own way.
As she read from the book, she stopped mid-sentence and said, "There's a typo! I never noticed that before."
