When Jane Gingera showed up at the Miss Universe Vancouver pageant last Friday she wasn't expecting to walk home with the title, but in the end that is exactly what she did.

"I just went into it for fun. I wasn't nervous, I just wanted to go out there and be myself," she said.

"I didn't try to prepare my questions. It was important for me to just go on stage and look natural."

It was the first year for the Miss Universe Vancouver pageant sponsored by the Patti Falconer talent agency.

"We had a huge crowd out there," Gingera said. "It's nice for those people to see that it's not just about beauty."

According to judges Charles Stuart and Jason Ainslie, that is exactly what they were looking for.

The next step for Gingera is the Miss Universe Canada pageant to be held in Montreal next year.

From catwalk demonstrations to a talent competition, the contestants had to run the beauty pageant gauntlet, which according to the judges is a fantastic way to start along the windy road to fame.

"If I like someone I will go to Charles and say that 'I want [to represent] them,'" said Ainslie, who is also a film, TV and commercial talent agent.

Ainslie added that one of the main attributes he was looking for in potential actors at the beauty pageants was for them to just be themselves.

In addition to healthy eating, proper skin and hair care and plenty of exercise, pageant contestants also need to do their homework if approached by scouting talent agents.

"Find a good agent, a reputable agent," said model agent-judge Charles Stuart. "Get your photographs together then keep working at the craft."
