TO SOME, they represent the degrading act of women parading themselves half naked for male pleasure. To others, they are a shortcut to celebrity and cash. Either way, the beauty pageant is back and enjoying a revival.
Five years ago the organisers of Miss Universe Australia struggled to attract more than a few hundred young women ready to don bikinis in search of the title. This year, 4812 came forward to claim the crown, with the winner to be decided in Melbourne on Wednesday night.
