Hopes to earn another crown this week
Kim Emery, a Heron Creek Middle School teacher and Charlotte County resident, wins the title of Ms. Southwest Florida 2008 in the Florida US Pageant.
NORTH PORT -- People always told Kim Emery she could never win a pageant because she wasn't like the other girls.
After tumbling into a moving lawn mower as a young girl, Emery had no feeling in her left knee, causing her to drag her leg while walking down the runway at pageants.
Even so, the Charlotte County resident defeated the odds and proved many stereotypes wrong after winning several titles -- most recently, Ms. Southwest Florida.
"Everyone has differences; you have to find it and embrace it," Emery said. "That's what I tell my students everyday."
As a reading teacher at Heron Creek Middle School in North Port, Emery is able to pass on her motivational thoughts about life and become a role model for young adults. Winning the title of Ms. Southwest Florida, a competition sponsored by Florida US Pageants, means much more than a beauty crown for this mentor.
"The pageant is called 'The Pageant With a Purpose,'" Emery said. "It's the only pageant that requires contestants to take part in the community."
