Miss USA report

Just finished watching NBC's coverage of the 2008 Miss USA pageant.

First of all, Donnie and Marie Osmond did a great job moderating the pageant. They kept things moving without making a nuisance of themselves. They let the young ladies be the star of the show.

The Top 15 were announced early in the show. I will list them in the "random order" they were announced in along with their swimsuit score:

Minnesota - 7.938
Massachusetts - 8.954
Oklahoma - 9.474
Rhode Island - 7.972
Missouri - 8.977
New Jersey - 8.531
South Carolina - 8.476
Tennessee - 8/687
Pennsylvania - 9.183
Mississippi - 8.522
Texas - 9.178
Indiana - 8.478
California - 8.289
Utah - 7.984
Florida - 8.567

Then, they brought it down to ten finalists. Here, I'll list them again in that "random order" they announced them in and place the evening gown score next to it.

Massachusetts - 8.439
Missouri - 8.622
New Jersey - 8.991
Pennsylvania - 9.089
Oklahoma - 9.318
Mississippi - 8.953
Tennessee - 8.460
Texas - 9.169
Indiana - 8.578
Florida - 8.500

Next, they awarded Miss Congeniality to Miss Ohio and Miss Photogenic to Miss Alaska.

In the Top 5, the final questions were something like this:

  • Miss Pennsylvania was asked if cosmetics should be marketed to elementary school children.
  • Miss Texas was asked if 18 year olds should have compulsory military service for a year.
  • Miss Oklahoma was asked what famous person she would like to help and why.
  • Miss New Jersey was asked if it was okay for parents to bring up their children without exposing them to television or the internet.
  • Miss Mississippi was asked what opportunities she received because she was a beautiful woman.
It came down to Miss Pennsylvania being our fourth runner up, Miss Oklahoma was third runner up (despite having the highest on-air voting scores--someone please explain this to me; I don't know enough about the scoring on Miss USA), Miss New Jersey was second runner up, and our first runner up was Miss Mississippi.

Our new Miss USA 2008 was Miss Texas Crystle Stewart from Missouri City, TX at 26 years of age and 5'9".

Congratulations Crystle and best wishes on a wonderful reign. Rachel Smith will truly be a tough and classy act to follow.
