Local businessman, Scott Clark, held a fragile piece of history in his hands last week. He not only held it, he repaired it. Clark, owner of Treasures Custom Jewelry in Bartlesville, was asked to repair the Miss America crown, dating from the 1960s.
Debbie Kendall, who brought in the crown, is a traveling companion for Miss America who this year happens to be an Oklahoman — Jennifer Berry from Tulsa.
Kendall, from Skiatook, first took the crown in early September to Skiatook jeweler and former Bartlesville business owner Cork Walden. Walden, who knew Clark as a business associate when in Bartlesville, felt uncomfortable with the repair request and referred Kendall to Clark.
“I got a call from Debbie telling me what was broken and could I fix it,” said Clark. “I told her it was no big deal, I do those types of repairs all the time. She seemed extremely happy someone would take the time.”
After the repair job, which consisted of sautering some broken joints in the crown, Kendall returned for the rhinestone-studded tiara.
