For those of you who celebrate Christmas, I'm sure you'll agree with me that much of the joy of the holiday is the traditions.
As children you have traditions, like the plan to catch Santa in the living room my little brother Carl and I made each year. (Which, by the way, worked one year.) Or that the wooden nativity ornament had to be hung on the tree on a yellow light, to make it look like the guiding star.
As adults the traditions might include certain foods, carols, parties, charity gifts, gift exchanges, and, of course, rehashing all the traditions of childhood.
A new lookfor Christmas Two years ago the people at The Look Total Concept Salon decided they wanted to start their own tradition. They decided to decorate the salon from head to foot in Christmas decorations, hold a raffle, and donate all the proceeds to charity.
Each year their efforts have been absolutely amazing. Walking into that salon this time or year is literally like walking into a childhood holiday dream. It's dazzling.
At this year's third annual open house at The Look, 8338 Washington Ave., everyone is invited to see them decked out in tributes to Hollywood's best Christmas movies ever. There will be sweets and treats, raffles, discounts on gifts and hair products and appearances by Miss Racine, Miss Festival of Trees and Miss Wisconsin USA. The event will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Dec. 10. All of the proceeds will be donated to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
A reason to celebrate The Racine radio station WRJN has its own reason to celebrate today. The station is marking its 80th anniversary, and is inviting Racine to mark the occasion with it.
From 4 to 7 p.m. WRJN will be broadcasting from Memorial Hall, the site of the station's very first broadcast back in 1926. They'll have all sorts of fascinating WRJN memorabilia on display, a chance for the public to meet present and past staff, old audio clips and refreshments. There will also be a special tribute to Ralph Schoenleben, 91, for his 50 years on the air with the classical music program "Sunday Evening Concert."
The anniversary celebration is free, however you do need a ticket to attend. You can pick up tickets at the WRJN studios at 4201 Victory Ave., or request them online at : http://www.WRJN.com
