Pageant adapting to change

When Miss Kansas 2007 is crowned in just over two months, she may not know when or where she will be competing at the next level, after Country Music Television announced last month that they will not televise the 2008 Miss America Pageant, thus leaving the time and location in limbo for now.

The situation is similar to that in 2005 when ABC discontinued its long-standing contract and as a result, the national pageant moved from its Atlantic City, N.J., home to Las Vegas and changed from a September to a January date.

Having adapted to change once they're better able to do it again, said Lisa Perez Miller, executive director of the Miss Kansas Organization, and uncertainty at the national level will have little impact on the states.

"We will proceed with preparations as we always do," Miller said.

Twenty-one contestants will arrive in Pratt on Tuesday, June 5 to begin rehearsals for preliminary competitions on Wednesday and Thursday nights, a Friday Night Live entertainment featuring both contestants and former titleholders, and the final competition on Saturday night. Absent this year will be the Miss Teen Kansas Pageant that was held in Wichita during February.

"We knew going in (to the contract with CMT) that they would exercise their option after two years or not," Miller said. "Like anything, it's a business and a lot of things are included in the assessment, not only ratings."
