American beauty

Suzanne Shelley's beauty philosophy is simple.

"I think the most important thing is just to be active, to have an interest and a passion for life," she said.

Ladies may want to take note because the radiant Shelley, a 60-year-old retired psychometrist, was crowned Ms. Senior America on Saturday at the national pageant in Las Vegas, beating out 32 other contestants.

The Ms. Senior Mississippi was her first pageant -her husband entered her while she was out of town - but she went straight to the top of the competition that honors women over 60, judging them on talent, poise, interviews and a short speech.

Now, Shelley, a Lamar County resident, has begun her yearlong reign of traveling -she may be heading off to New York City to ride in the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade, although she has to juggle a family trip at the same time. In March, she'll ride with Miss America in the St. Patrick's Day Parade.
