Christina Keegan, front, is crowned Miss Nevada 2009 by Miss Nevada 2008 Julianna Erdesz on June 27 at the conclusion of the Miss Nevada Pageant at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts in Reno.
Christina Keegan is breaking stereotypes.
Keegan, 23, a medical school student and beauty queen, proves you can be smart and pretty.
She is a 2004 graduate of Douglas High School in Gardnerville. She admits she entered the pageant system because "it's just what you do at Douglas."
"I didn't want to be stereotyped as less intelligent and superficial," said Keegan, who admits the pageant system has a long way to go in breaking the stereotype.
She said stereotypes go both ways and she hopes she can show that people studying medicine are not just nerds with their heads in books.
"My undergraduate degree is in molecular biology so there's a stereotype out there that if you are studying medicine you can't also enjoy being on stage and performing."
