Miss Madison is new Miss Wisconsin

OSHKOSH — After winning a two preliminary awards earlier in the week, Miss Madison, Christina Anna Thompson, was chosen as Miss Wisconsin of 2007 Saturday night.

Thompson, 22, of Pleasant Prairie in Kenosha County, was victorious on her second attempt at the state pageant and was crowned by the outgoing Miss Wisconsin, Meghan Marie Coffey, 23, of New Berlin.

Thompson, a classical violinist, had won the Thursday preliminary swimsuit award and tied for the Friday talent award after she performed Fritz Kreisler’s “Praeludium & Allegro” on the violin.

It was the same violin piece which earned Thompson a talent award in 2002 when she competed as Miss Wisconsin West.

She went on to place third runner-up to Miss Wisconsin 2002.

Thompson also won the evening gown award at the pageant and will advance to the 2008 Miss America pageant next January. She becomes the fifth Miss Madison to win the Miss Wisconsin crown. The previous were in 1970, 1987, 2003 and 2004.

Placing first runner-up Saturday night was Miss Fox River Valley, Michelyn Cynthia Butler, 24, of Tampa, Fla. The Madison-born tap dancer is a University of Wisconsin-Madison psychology graduate student who sought to become the first black woman to be named Miss Wisconsin.

Butler, who won her title in Appleton in March, would assume the state crown should Thompson be chosen Wisconsin’s second ever Miss America.
