It would be just too, too trite for me to say the third time was the charm at this year's Miss Texas Scholarship Pageant, so I won't.
It was, however, on Molly Hazlett's third try for the Miss Texas crown that she won. When the judges chose this tall, beautiful, blond ballerina Saturday night, the crown went back to the more stereotypical Miss Texas package. Last year's winner, Shilah Phillips, a very poised, charismatic singer and the pageant's first African-American title holder, did extremely well ... all the way to first runner-up in the Miss America Pageant.
Northeast Tarrant County claimed several of this year's contenders, including Mercy Morales, Miss Hurst-Euless-Bedford, who won ninth place. A guitarist and graduate of Southern Methodist University, she's volunteered at local charity events the past year, earning her a fan following. Then Danielle Nations, who competed as Miss Hunt County but who calls Keller home, earned 10th place and a preliminary talent award for her vocals.
For the first time, the Miss Teen Texas pageant was held simultaneously with the "big girls." The lone contender from the area was Miss Teen Southlake, Ilsa Levine.
