Kimberly Aiken went from Miss Columbia to Miss America in 1994.

‘There she is’ begins with return of Miss Columbia

There she is, Miss Columbia — again.

It’s been four years since Columbia has sent a representative to the Miss America organization’s Miss South Carolina Pageant. And as far as some are concerned, that’s four years too long.

All that will change next month when the event returns to Keenan High School.

And few people are more excited about the Oct. 21 event than Erin Gambrell.

“The confidence, presence, poise — those are things you can’t learn in college,” Gambrell said.

Miss World beauties flock to Poland’s cultural Mecca

WARSAW.- The contestants of the Miss World Pageant are flocking to Poland’s western city of Wroclaw, a cultural Mecca on the country’s Odra river.

The contestants, upon arriving in the historical city’s main town square in a sunny afternoon, were cheered by thousands of locals who took part in a exhibition of paintings specially commissioned for the event.

The Miss World contestants took part in an exhibit with drawings which were prepared mostly by children and every Miss added her own touch and signed the work. This performance sought to capture the key spirit of each represented country and transpose it to canvas.

Paola Torres Cohen, Miss Dominican Republic worked together with a polish Boy, who accurately portrayed Quisqueya’s essence as a Caribbean island whose perspectives include a still developing yet strong tourism-based economy.

MISS WORLD PREVIEW FIXED ODDS BETTING PREVIEW

Miss World, a competition founded by Eric Morley, the man responsible for the entertainment chain Mecca, is established as one of the most watched annual events on television - at its peak the show drew a staggering audience of 27.5million in Britain alone!

The claws will be out in force in Warsaw, Poland on September 30 when the 56th Miss World extravaganza takes place, as 104 fine female specimens are put through their paces, all bidding to carry away the coveted crown.

It has to be said that, regardless of how hard a day the bookies' male odds compilers have had, I very much doubt that there would be complaints from those appointed to price this event up. At the time of writing, Blue Square and Sporting Odds are the firms to have formed a market on this event.

The Hottest TV Actress: Shandi Finnessey, The Host With the Most

By James Lalumondiere CLOUT INDEX
Sep 19 2006 11:30AM

Throughout the years the movies have introduced us to the world of glamorous people. Those we all wish we looked like or wanted to be because they are so handsome or beautiful in one way or another. In later years as the evolution of the television came along and those big screen actors started being noticed on commercials and daytime television programs.

There are so many "hot" men and women on television today it is hard to pick just one. Throughout all the cable channels out there, the GSN network has one of the most beautiful women on television, and though not a movie actress, she still plays a big roll on television.

Shandi Finnessey is currently the host of the widely-popular game show "Playmania" which airs on the GSN network, as well as co-host with Chuck Woolery on the game show "Lingo". This five-foot ten-inch blonde-haired blue-eyed beauty was born in Florissant, Missouri. She is 26 years old and holds a B.S. from Lindenwood University in Psychology and is working towards a Masters degree in Counseling.

Shandi was crowned Miss USA being the first Miss Missouri to be given this title in 2004, as well as becoming first runner up in the Miss Universe that same year. Shandi was also involved in research for androgyny and was published in the SEPA Journal in 1999. In 2002, Shandi published a children's book entitled "Furrtails" in 2002.

Hong Kong TV Network Wins Piracy Lawsuit

© 2006 The Associated Press

HONG KONG — Television Broadcasts Ltd., Hong Kong's biggest terrestrial broadcaster, successfully sued a Web site in mainland China that distributed the network's programs _ including a Miss Hong Kong beauty pageant _ without permission, the broadcaster said Monday.

The portal http://www.21cn.com was ordered by the High Court in the southern province of Guangdong to pay TVB 200,000 yuan (US$25,174, euro19,861) in compensation, TVB said in a statement.

"TVB is most pleased with the judgment as it sets a precedent in China that copyrights should be respected," the broadcaster said about the July decision.

The Web site was illegally distributing the drama series "The Bund," the variety show "Gala Spectacular 2003" and "Miss Hong Kong Pageant 2003," among other programs, TVB said.

Bob Barker readies for record 35th season of game show

By SANDY COHEN
Associated Press

Television's iron man continues to forge on.

Bob Barker will start his 35th season as the host of ''The Price Is Right'' on Monday.

Johnny Carson once held the record for continuous tenure with the same show: 29 years. Barker broke it in 2002. And Merv Griffin's game-show classics ''Jeopardy!'' and ''Wheel of Fortune'' are years behind ''Price,'' the longest-running game show in TV history.

Barker's approach, like the show's set, has remained essentially unchanged since he arrived Sept. 4, 1972, to host what was then called ''The New Price Is Right'': wholesome, playful and family friendly.

He's weathered some challenges along the way, including the death of his wife (and producer), Dorothy Jo, in 1981 and a sexual harassment lawsuit filed (and later dropped) by one of the show's models in 1994.

But even in this era of endless channel choices and increasing fascination with the shocking and salacious, Barker and ''Price'' maintain an upbeat, timeless charm.

The 82-year-old talked with The Associated Press about the secrets of his lasting appeal and what he's got planned for the next 35 years.

AP: What is it about the show that's kept audiences hooked for all these years?

Barker: My agent says it's the host. We've been on so long, I've been told by young people, that their grandmother introduced them to ''The Price is Right.'' It all adds up to a family thing that has been passed down from one generation to another. And nothing has changed. The only thing that's changed on ''The Price is Right'' is the color of my hair. When you turn the television on, you're back in the 1970s.

AP: Will you ever retire?

Barker: I've thought about retiring for 10 or 15 years, but I have so much fun and the show is so successful that it's tough to walk away from. I just signed a five-year contract, believe it or not. I don't expect to last five years. I know that for about three years now, Freemantle (Media, which owns ''Price'') has been looking for a host. But I'm still doing the show so apparently they haven't found the right one.

AP: Did you ever expect to last this long on the program?

Barker: My late wife said, ''If you have anything, it's tenacity.'' I did the pageants, Miss Universe and Miss USA, for 21 years. I did the Rose Parade for 21 years. I did the Pillsbury Bake-Off for 20 years. I went back for years, about 20 years, and did the Indianapolis 500 parade. I did ''Truth or Consequences'' for 18 years. When I get a job I hang onto it.

She has worn designer frocks to be crowned Miss Universe, to dance with the stars and to plug a major department store - but she had nothing to wear to help celebrate the 50 years of Australian television.

So when Alex Perry offered to dress Jennifer Hawkins for the black-tie "TV Turns 50" event in Sydney tonight, the star was more than happy to take him up on the offer.

"I can't wait to walk down the red carpet in it," she said.

But, in true fashion form, the details of the dress have been kept a closely guarded secret.

"All I can say is it's not sparkly, it has straps and colour," Perry said. "Apart from that, I can't say anything else.

"But it is a dress I have designed especially for Jen."

Hawkins will join American actors Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly at Star City casino for the event to be broadcast live on Channel Seven.

The evening will include the countdown of the top-20 television moments, voted by the Australian public.

"My favourite moment on television would actually have to be Hey, Hey, It's Saturday," Hawkins said. "I used to love sitting at home on a Saturday night watching it.

Heather Whitestone McCallum was humbled as she modestly accepted the warm applause from the students at Northeastern University. Although, it wasn’t as loud as one might expect. This is because the speech McCallum gave was delivered to the university’s deaf community where the sign for applause is the raising and shaking their hands.

McCallum was the first crown Miss America in the pageant’s 75-year history. Since winning her title ten years ago, McCallum has been on a mission. She has traveled across the nation inspiring others to reach for their dreams. McCallum’s travels recently lead her to Northeastern University where she spoke to students and faculty, both deaf and hearing, about her experiences and her accomplishments.
