City woman represents state after pageant win

She was crowned Mrs. Wisconsin Galaxy in March.

After losing enough weight to begin competing in regular pageants, Jakowicz saw more success than in her first attempt. She was crowned Ms. National America in 2001 and Ms. U.S. Beauties in 2002 and has held other state titles.

Ten years ago, Debra Jakowicz decided to take a chance.

She had never been in any pageants and was overweight, but she decided to try a plus-size women’s competition.

“I said, ‘Hey, this is the way I am. They’re going to accept me the way I am,’” she recalled.

Jakowicz didn’t win that pageant, but going through the process only encouraged her.
