Tell Abby Curran she can’t do something and her reply will be, “watch me.” This was her attitude when she wanted to run for the Miss Iowa State beauty pageant.

Miss Iowa Abby Curran speaks to the crowd on Wednesday in the JKB about overcoming the obstacles that come with having cerebral palsy.

Curran spoke in the Jesse Knight Building Wednesday night on behalf of the Now I Can Foundation. She discussed how she overcame obstacles and discouragement from those who said it wasn’t possible.

Curran has cerebral palsy, a condition affecting body movements and muscle coordination. According to a cerebral palsy organization Web site, this condition is caused by damage to one of more specific areas of the brain, usually occurring during fetal development or infancy.
