Indiana legislators honor Miss America, who is from Seymour

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The first Miss America from Indiana charmed legislators during a visit to the Statehouse.

Before the Indiana House session began Thursday, some lawmakers posed for pictures with Katie Stam of Seymour, who wore a black dress and sparkling crown. Lawmakers said Stam was a smart and talented person who represents the state well.

Stam spoke briefly, telling legislators that she hopes to use her time as Miss America campaigning for various organizations helping people.
Stam later joined Gov. Mitch Daniels to talk to sixth graders about fitness and health. The governor and Stam joined the class in a relay race.

Stam's visit to Indiana this week was her first since winning the Miss America title Jan. 24 in Las Vegas.
