Competitor: Pageants provide valuable experience
Ashley Bales plays in the snow with her family’s cocker spaniel Tucker outside her Princeton home. Earlier this month, Bales competed in the Miss Illinois Teen USA pageant in Chicago and was named one of 18 semi-finalists in a competition of 126 girls. Bales says competing in pageants helps young women develop their communication skills and confidence.
Ashley Bales says her experiences competing in the 2009 Miss Illinois Teen USA pageant helped her develop skills she will use in her future career in business.
Bales, 18, of Princeton will start her sophomore year at Illinois Valley Community College in January.
After graduating, she plans to transfer to Illinois State University to study business and marketing with hopes of working in the fashion industry for a retailer like Neiman Marcus.
