Miss SD says she breaks all the rules

"When I told my friends about it, they didn't believe me," Hoffman said. "They were like 'Alex, what? That's not something you would typically do.' It was not only a shock for me but for other people in my life as well."

In January, Hoffman, who is now 20-yearsold and has been crowned Miss South Dakota, will compete against 52 other women from around the nation for the Miss America crown at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.

"When I went into it I was told that a rookie never wins," she said. "I was standing there with another girl in her fifth competition, and at that point I thought I would just try again next year. When they didn't say my name I was like, 'What? Really?' It was a big surprise , and a good surprise."

Hoffman's talent is singing, and the song she chose is the same one she sang at the Miss South Dakota competition.
