November 26th, 2008

Dear Friends,

The holidays are officially upon us, which means in addition to cold weather, warm fires, and Christmas songs… it’s getting closer and closer to the 2009 Miss America Pageant. My year of service isn’t up yet though…

November 7 and 8 I had the great opportunity to speak to health professionals at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and Rogers Memorial Hospital (both in Milwaukee) about eating disorders and their effect on the adolescent population. I love sharing my personal experiences with professionals as it offers them deeper insight into a patients perspective. It’s also good to share with them the importance of physicians being trained to recognize symptoms and complications related to eating disorders, as so many deadly cases go untreated because a doctor didn’t recognize a 17 year old’s heart attack as a consequence of her eating disorder. I was able to tour the facilities at Rogers Memorial Hospital which has in and outpatient services, as well as a residential treatment center. The hospital provides care and treatment not only for eating disorders, but also OCD, and severe panic and anxiety disorders, which are oftentimes, co-morbid with eating disorders. I spoke on Saturday evening at the hospital’s Foundation fundraising gala, about the importance and need for dialogue about mental illness, especially eating disorders. I congratulated them on their successes and their compassion for all those and their families who are affected. What an incredible and inspiring weekend.
