American Queen DASH Ball
Connie welcomed all and introduced her reigning American Queen titleholders. It was the beginning of a wonderful evening. As the ladies settled down to their meals, thier tiaras twinkled silently in the lights. Very elegant for all. To crown off the affair, a special American Queen logo cake was brought out.
Once the music cranked up, spontaneous Congo lines were the order of day along with clapping and stomping of heels.
It was a good time--expect some fun photos once I get back to Wisconsin next week!

Wednesday at the Galaxy Pageants
Wen it came time for the swimsuit photoshoot, a freak "gullywasher" of a storm came through. The poolside shoot moved to the tropical Royal Caribe lobby. With these beauties posing within view of the front desk, I felt like suggesting to cone off the stairs...many a gentleman dealing with baggage was hopelessly distracted by the display!
I had a great laugh over it, but I'm not sure the ladies even noticed as they posed in the lush tropical settings among palm trees.
I came back in the evening and spoke briefly to director and president Maria Torres. Galaxy has continued to grow and next year they will be moving to a larger facility in Tampa, Florida. In addition, she was excited about the increased international presence at the pageant with delegates from the United Kingdom, Bulgaria, Canada and the Caribbean now participating at Galaxy.

Miss International preliminary competition
Before the show, we sneaaked in four interviews with some of the lovely Teen competitors that were in attendance to cheer on their "big sisters" in tonight's pageant.
Tonight I decided to type up these notes during the pageant on my Nokia internet tablet. I know it isn't as cool as you cyber-texters, but give me a break--I'm an old man and trying to get with the times.
There are 43 Miss contestants this year--same as the Teen side. The Teen Int'l director of the year is Eddie Peterson and Miss Int'l director of the year is Allison Stedvrokas.
They don't want us texting during the show so I need to pause.
Excellent rendition of Fun Fashion and Fitness. We had a close call, but no falls.
Okay. I'm back.
A lot of Faviana, Sherri Hill and Tony Bowls--so I'm told...I have no eye for that stuff...beautiful gowns from the top of the program to the bottom. Really amazing show.
Production singer Ryan Greenwalts did a fantastic job entertaining the audience throughout.
Special awards were:
Photogenic: Arkansas and California
Miss Congeniality: Missouri
Congratulations to this wonderful young ladies!

Exclusive: New Miss England Laura Coleman comes from Beauty Queen stock - mirror.co.uk
Exclusive: New Miss England Laura Coleman comes from Beauty Queen stock - mirror.co.ukBy Kate Jackson 22/07/2008
The Miss England crown sits comfortably on Laura Coleman's head and little wonder... she comes from real beauty queen stock.
Blonde business graduate Laura, 22, beat 49 other finalists to take the prestigious title on Friday, securing her place to compete for her country in the Miss World contest in the Ukraine in October.
And she must have some beautiful genes.
Because Laura's mum, Dena Coleman, 56, from Derby, and grandmother Irene Patrick, 88, from Leicester, were both beauty queens back in the day.
Irene - or Nanny P as Laura calls her - started the trend way back in the 40s by becoming Miss Army Pin-Up and Miss Lovely Legs. Then ex-hairdresser Dena, who now works in a butcher's shop, notched up 15 titles when she was in her early 20s, including Miss East Anglia and as a finalist in the Miss UK contest.
Teaching beauty pageants goes beyond skin deep : The University Daily Kansan
Teaching beauty pageants goes beyond skin deep : The University Daily KansanStaci Klinginsmith can’t help it, but when the National American Miss Kansas Pageant rolls around next month she knows she will be on the edge of her seat. Klinginsmith, Overland Park senior, has been competing in beauty pageants since she was young, but the last several years she has put her performing dreams on hold.
To help pay for college, Klinginsmith now trains younger contestants for the pageant.
“I get more nervous watching the girls compete than when I actually compete because I invest so much time and energy in helping them succeed,” Klinginsmith said. “It feels like they are my children on stage.”
One thing that bothers Klinginsmith is the stereotypes others have regarding beauty pageants.
“People just think we are pretty girls without anything going on upstairs,” Klinginsmith said.
Klinginsmith, who plans to graduate next year with a business finance degree, said that beauty pageants helped prepare girls for life in the real world.
Natalie Hays, one of the girls Klinginsmith trains, said before she started competing, she was terrified of public speaking, but now because of the pageants she said she has become a better communicator. Klinginsmith said the pageants were designed to teach girls self-confidence.
Mid-Iowa Newspapers - Boone woman crowned Mrs. Iowa
Mid-Iowa Newspapers - Boone woman crowned Mrs. IowaBoone woman crowned Mrs. IowaBy: Kyle Ferguson, Staff Writer06/13/2008Updated 06/21/2008 12:06:04 AM CDTLaura Diers, of Boone, used her beauty and brains to earn the title of Mrs. Iowa-America last weekend.
"I've been in the pageant circuit since 1999, and I'm usually first runner up," Diers said.
Diers typically does one pageant a year, so as to balance it with her family and professional life, working for Stott and Associates in Ames.
"It's a tricky balance that requires sacrifices, but I don't ignore my family by any means," Diers said.
Another factor limiting Diers' attendance at pageants is the cost involved.
"Pageants are not something that pay you back financially," she said. "But it really helps in self growth and confidence building."
The only other title that Diers has won was the national title in the 2006 Beauties of America pageant.
miss america resigns: 7-23-1984 « Gislena’s Weblog
miss america resigns: 7-23-1984 « Gislena’s WeblogOn this day in 1984, 21-year-old Vanessa Williams gives up her Miss America title, the first resignation in the pageant’s history, after Penthouse magazine announces plans to publish nude photos of the beauty queen in its September issue. Williams originally made history on September 17, 1983, when she became the first black woman to win the Miss America crown. Miss New Jersey, Suzette Charles, the first runner-up and also an African American, assumed Williams’ tiara for the two months that remained of her reign.
Vanessa Lynn Williams was born March 18, 1963, in Millwood, New York, to music teacher parents. She attended Syracuse University and studied musical theater. In 1982, while working a summer job as a receptionist at a modeling agency in Mt. Kisco, New York, photographer Thomas Chiapel took the nude pictures of Williams, telling her they’d be shot in silhouette and that she wouldn’t be recognizable. After Williams became Miss America, the photographer sold the pictures to Penthouse without her knowledge. Williams later dropped lawsuits against the magazine and photographer after it was learned that she had signed a model release form at the time the photos were taken.
The Miss America pageant, which prides itself on projecting a wholesome, positive image of women, began in 1921 in Atlantic City, New Jersey, as a stunt developed by local businessmen to extend the summer tourist season. In 1945, the Miss America Organization handed out its first scholarship. Today, it provides over $45 million each year in cash and tuition assistance to contestants on the national, state and local levels. In 1954, the competition was broadcast live for the first time. Beginning in the 1980s, contestants were required to have a social platform, such as drunk-driving prevention or AIDS awareness, and Miss America winners now travel an estimated 20,000 miles a month for speaking engagements and public appearances. In 2006, following a decline in TV ratings, the pageant moved from Atlantic City for the first time in its history and took place in Las Vegas, where a new Miss America was crowned in January instead of September.

The Associated Press: Miss Universe glad to put modeling career on hold
By SIGAL RATNER-ARIAS – 3 hours agoNEW YORK (AP) — Dayana Mendoza put a promising modeling career on hold to go for — and win — the Miss Universe crown.
"Being a model is just great. You show a brand, a beautiful dress," said the 22-year-old Venezuelan. "But being Miss Venezuela and Miss Universe, you have the opportunity to go all over the world and have contact with the people and show yourself, and that's what I really wanted."
After years of strutting along catwalks and learning to speak three languages, Mendoza's savvy in front of cameras and an audience paid off at last week's pageant.
"I had been working as a model since I was 15, traveling in various countries around the world, but I felt I needed more," Mendoza said.
She spoke with The Associated Press this week in New York, where for the next year she'll share an apartment with Miss USA and Miss Teen USA, and be the public face of a global campaign against HIV and AIDS.

Fall of "Miss America"
So far this morning, I've found five articles saying "Miss America" fell at the pageant last night.
Here's some links:

Inaccurate, right? Well, maybe some of you will calm down the next time someone bemoans a pageant is dying to find out if they are actually reporting on the correct system. I get these all the time with people all whooped up only to find the reporter mistakenly declared a state or county fair pageant part of the MAO system.
I call it like I see 'em.

Angela's Adventures: I'm home....I'm off again.
I just wanted to post a quick update.Angela's Adventures: I'm home....I'm off again.
I have just returned from spending a week at girls camp with my young women.
I am EXHAUSTED but thrilled I went despite the sleeping in tents, on the ground in sleeping bags and obtaining more bugs bites than any one person should have to endure... I have 35 on my right leg alone! Can you say cover up?? :)
It was both wonderful and challenging and I promise to give details when I return from Nationals.
I took LOTS of pictures and will add them to the update via a slide show.
Tomorrow I head out for Chicago stopping briefly in Minneapolis where I will be catching my flight Tuesday morning. I am SO excited!! I will do my best to post pictures as the week progresses. Thank you so much to everyone who is cheering my on all over the country.
I will do my best to make you proud and enjoy every moment of this journey.
Now I need to finish packing and get some sleep.
Mrs. Oregon International 2008: Off to Chicago for Mrs. International
Well, the time has finally come. Monday morning Cam will drive me to the airport for my trip to Chicago to represent Oregon in the Mrs. International pageant. It has been an exciting time for our family as we make arrangements for Cam and me to go off to the windy city, and assure our little dog Jake that we will, in fact, be returning home!Mrs. Oregon International 2008: Off to Chicago for Mrs. InternationalBut it has also been challenging in ways I could not have imagined. As the previous couple of weeks have demonstrated, things did not turn out as expected prior to leaving for Chicago. My beloved God Mother, Aunt Doris (my father's sister), passed away the week of the Fourth of July. It was and is a sad time for my family. She was such a loving, wonderful, thoughtful person and she is one of the very special people who guided me to the person I am today.
AFP: Venezuelan beauty wins Miss Universe crown
NHA TRANG, Vietnam (AFP) — Miss Venezuela took the crown and Miss USA took a tumble before up to one billion television viewers at the Miss Universe pageant held in Vietnam on Monday.AFP: Venezuelan beauty wins Miss Universe crownVenezuela's Dayana Mendoza, 22, burst into tears when the presenter, US talk show host Jerry Springer, announced she had beaten finalists from Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Russia.
The 178-centimetre (five foot 10) beauty, the favourite of pageant bloggers and online bookmakers, clinched the diamond-studded gold crown after answering a question on the difference between men and women.
"Men think that the fastest way to go to a point is to go straight," explained the trilingual aspiring interior designer. "Women know that the faster way to go to a point is to go to the curves."
Mendoza, who was once kidnapped in her home country, later issued a call for an end to violence in the world.
"The kidnapping happened a year and a half ago," she said at a post-pageant press conference, answering questions in both English and Spanish.
"It's something that happens in my country. You don't even have to have money to be kidnapped ... That's why I wanted to raise my voice and tell the world that violence is not the answer."
Indiana Gazette Online - Fabian to receive Harvey Award
Written by Bill Zimmerman, Gazette Staff WriterIndiana Gazette Online - Fabian to receive Harvey Award
Wednesday, 02 July 2008
The museum dedicated to one of western Pennsylvania's most beloved entertainers will again honor a big name from the eastern part of the state.
The Jimmy Stewart Museum announced this morning that a Harvey Award will be given to the Philadelphia-born, former teen idol Fabian, more than a month after giving a Harvey to another Philadelphia native, actress Grace Kelly.
The award will be given at a ceremony Oct. 24 or 25 at a venue to be announced.
Born Fabian Anthony Forte, he first appeared on "American Bandstand" in 1958 and would record several hits before turning 18, earning gold plaques (500,000 copies sold) for the songs "Turn Me Loose" and "Tiger" and the album "The Fabulous Fabian."
Forte, 65, who lives in Fayette County, starred with Stewart in the 1962 film "Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation" and 1965's "Dear Brigitte." Other film credits include "The Longest Day," "North to Alaska," "High Time" and "Ride the Wild Surf." He also made several appearances on television sitcoms and hosted two concert specials for PBS. In 1993, he received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Informational Series as producer of the TV mini-series "The Wild West."
In 2000, the Philadelphia Music Alliance honored him with a star on its Walk of Fame, and he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2002.
Forte still tours, and for 20 years has done shows with fellow Philadelphia natives Frankie Avalon and Bobby Rydell as The Golden Boys.
He is married to Andrea Patrick Forte, a former beauty queen and co-owner of the Patrick Talent Agency in Connellsville. The agency represents Fabian's The Original Stars of American Bandstand tour, which also includes Bobby Vee, The Chiffons, Brian Hyland and Chris Montez.
