TLC turns 'Miss America' into a hit

Wednesday, January 30th 2008, 4:00 AM

A little makevoer help from the experts at TLC helped boost the audience for the "Miss America Pageant."

An estimated 3.63 million viewers tuned into TLC's first-ever telecast of the famed, and aging, beauty pageant Saturday night, according to Nielsen Media Research.

That's up 2 million viewers from the year before when CMT aired the event from Las Vegas. However, it's down from the 7 million who viewed ABC's telecast of the show in 2004, the last time it aired on a broadcast network.

The increase in viewers is a positive sign for the pageant, which had, until Saturday night, been on TV life support.

Last year, officials at CMT declined to pick up an option to keep "Miss America" on the country channel, and walked away from the show after two low-rated outings.
