Lu Parker, Miss USA 1994

Lu Parker, Miss USA 2004

I recently had the thrill to talk to Lu Parker, our Miss USA 1994 and the author of "Catching the Crown." She is a broadcaster out in Los Angeles and was an incredibly generous interview guest. I couldn't believe that this superstar gave us so much time to talk and to learn about her incredible Miss USA experience.

By the way, if you haven't checked out her book, "Catching the Crown," try this link and get a few copies for all the pageant participants you know!

Tyra Banks, Ashton Kutcher Team Up

Duo to produce unscripted series for ABC
Tyra Banks
Tyra Banks
The masterminds behind The CW's two most successful reality series will collaborate on a new project -- for ABC.

"America's Next Top Model" co-creator/host Tyra Banks and "Beauty and the Geek" executive producer Ashton Kutcher have joined forces for a new unscripted show. ABC has ordered eight episodes of the untitled project, the showbiz trade papers report.

The producers and the network are keeping quiet about the show's premise, and maybe even spreading a little bit of disinformation about it. Depending on whose account you read, the series will involve either "beautiful people living in a house together" (Variety) or "contestants competing in a beauty pageant" (Hollywood Reporter). Those concepts, of course, are not necessarily mutually exclusive.

Honey Lee’s acting debut

Former Miss Korea Lee Ha-nui, otherwise known as Honey Lee, has been busy acting as a television broadcast MC and as a model for various CFs and clothing brands ever since she placed in the finals for last year’s Miss Universe pageant. And now she’s branching out into acting, preparing for her debut — in a musical.

Her rep explained that she’d considered making her acting debut in a drama or film, “but chose a musical in order to showcase her particular skills.” As you may know, she’s a noted classical musician, having majored in traditional music (gayageum, pansori) at Seoul National University. Not only that, she reportedly was in training as a vocalist under YG Entertainment prior to her Miss Korea win. She’ll begin rehearsals for the musical next week, produced by PMC productions (Nanta, which is what’s described as a “non-verbal performance,” conveying its message via music, dance, and movement, while incorporating a fair amount of traditional folk music elements).

Miss America finishers to perform in Muskegon

MUSKEGON -- Ten of the top Miss America finishers and 18 Miss Michigan contestants, former titleholders and teen winners return to the Frauenthal Theater, site of the annual state pageant, to honor the new Miss America, Kirsten Haglund, one of our own.

Friday's contestant showcase at 7 p.m. will be a fast-paced production -- full of pageantry, fanfare and fantastic talent. Themed "Dreams Come True," the two-and-a-half hour show will involve a cast and crew of 130 people, including performances by Haglund with her father and brother, said Producer Dori Matkowski of Walled Lake.

Matkowski, a former Miss Farmington (now Oakland County), has known Haglund since she was a young girl and asked to produce her homecoming show. Matkowski also owns Dance Dynamics Performing Arts Center in Walled Lake and came to know Haglund through Oakland County's pageant program. Her children also attended Walled Lake Western High School with Haglund and her brother, Lars.

Haglund, 19, of Farmington Hills, will arrive at the theater via a horse-drawn carriage.

Miss Wellington adds a bit of sporty spice

The 80s anthem Girls Just Wanna Have Fun rang out – a sort of mission statement for the Miss Wellington beauty pageant.

The first search in eight years for Wellington's next top model was held last night at the Loaded Hog bar.

With ten contestants, a VIP section full of men, and a crowd of cheering female supporters, the battle was fierce.

Winner Rebecca Connor, 23, of Seatoun, was the crowd's favourite when she strolled out to the catwalk for the first sports-themed round dressed as a golfer – though not one you're likely to see too often. She was not too worried about the pressures of the Miss Universe-sanctioned pageant: "It's just all in the name of fun for me."

To those who criticise beauty pageants as relics of another era, she had a simple answer. "I think it's about confidence for girls. I don't think it should be taken too seriously."

Other contestants appeared in sports gear as varied and flexible as "army", "aerobics" and "Pocahontas". Some contestants from the Hutt Valley were eager to get to the bikini round – appearing early on with very little clothing at all.
