Just days before she sets off for Las Vegas to compete in the Miss America pageant, Miss California Melissa Chaty is calm and relaxed as she attends a rehearsal for three local pageants in her hometown of Ukiah.
She pirouettes and swings her freshly cut hair for the pageant’s emcee, Tony Moises, who has complimented her new, sophisticated chin-length do, the product of a makeover on “Miss America Realty Check,” a four-week close encounter with the other 51 Miss America contestants on cable’s TLC channel.
“I don’t have time to be nervous,” Chaty said.
