What traits do pageant judges look for?

Is it possible to predict the next winner of the Miss Tennessee Scholarship Pageant?

Without a crystal ball, no.

But there are some trends in Miss Tennessee pageant history that reveal what it takes to bring home the crown.

The Jackson Sun interviewed Miss Tennessee pageant historian Jerry Alford, who could point out many trends in pageants past.

"Since the pageant began in Jackson in 1953, there have been more winners from West and Middle Tennessee," Alford said.

For the last 10 years, Miss Tennessee has been a singer, dancer or musician.

"Vocal singing is our most popular talent," Alford said.

The most unusual talent for a contestant was in 1957 when Miss Tennessee Amanda Whitman, of Nashville, jumped on a trampoline.

A trend that hasn't been broken in years is the age of the young lady who receives the crown.

"We haven't had a teenager to win since 1968," Alford said. "That was Miss Kingsport, Brenda Seal. She was 19, and she finished in the top 10 in the Miss America pageant."
