Legend laments dropping of pageant

Piece of Americana, says Ralph Emery

The news of CMT dropping the Miss America TV show is another blow to an American institution that has struggled to find a place in modern popular culture.

The 86-year-old contest, which began as a publicity stunt for Atlantic City boardwalk business owners, became a TV event of Super Bowl proportions, drawing 80 million viewers in its heyday. After 50 years on network television, ABC dropped Miss America in 2004 when ratings fell to a record low, which is how it came to air on CMT.

Nashville broadcasting legend Ralph Emery, a veteran radio and television broadcaster for more than a half-century, lamented the news that the pageant has lost its home again.

"It's a piece of Americana that I hate to see dropped by the broadcasting industry."
