Mississauga's Ashley Thornton is among 58 women from across the country competing this weekend in Montreal at the 2007 Miss Universe Canada pageant.
Thornton, 23, also competed in the contest in 2005. Another two-time competitor, Toronto's Natalie Glebova, won the Canadian title two years ago and went on to capture the Miss Universe crown as well.
A graduate of St. Francis Xavier Secondary School, Thornton said she hopes to win so she can use the title to help the community. She holds a soft spot for the Humane Society and the Hospital For Sick Children, organizations she plans to promote if she wins. She also wants to speak out against bullying in schools.
"I wasn't the (coolest) kid growing up; I've been bullied, and I'd like to help out my community," said Thornton. "The community could use help. This is where I live and the people I care about and love live here as well. So, I want to make a difference here."
