Miss modest millionaire

SHE uses a pre-paid mobile phone and has driven the same car for years.

And last week, after signing a history-making $4 million contract with retail giant Myer, she still agonised over buying a pair of jeans.

Such is the world of Jennifer Hawkins, the unassuming former Miss Universe whose idea of a good party is a barbecue and a glass of champagne with her girlfriends.

"It's pretty hard to believe," she says of the four-year deal she struck on her 23rd birthday last month.

Not only will Hawkins be paid almost a million dollars a year to continue her role as the face of Myer, she has been awarded stock options in the retailer.

When Myer floats publicly (widely expected as early as 2009), she will have the option of selling her stocks or retaining a nice chunk of the company.

The deal, which also includes a bonus if sales targets are reached, is understood to be the most lucrative ever struck by an Australian-based model, and hints at the canny business sense that has propelled one of Hawkins' idols – Elle Macpherson – to super-success.
