KNOWN as the “repository and guardian of the Philippine’s natural and cultural heritage,” the National Museum in the city of Manila, inspired by the Parthenon in Athens, Greece, was the venue for this year’s coronation night of the Miss Earth pageant, organized and produced by Carousel Productions Inc. and aired late Sunday night on ABS-CBN.
The pageant revived the career of Ariel Ureta, long lost and almost forgotten, as he hosted the proceedings along with Miss Earth 2004 titlist Priscilla Meirelles of Brazil.
The modern-day Athenas, all 82 of them, wore white, powder-blue and sea-green satin fringed dresses while singing and dancing to Hotdog band’s song, “Manila,” under an open sky for the opening sequence, known traditionally as the “Parade of Nations.”

And so this year’s board of judges, composed of San Miguel Beer cager Dorian Peña, ABS-CBN senior vice president for business development and media Jose Ramon Olives, former Bb. Pilipinas-Universe 1997 and personality/image consultant Abbygale Arenas-De Leon, beauty expert-cum-philanthropist Ricky Reyes, fashion model Tweety de Leon-Gonzalez, Fashion TV founder and chairman Michel Adam, Richmonde Hotel owner and president Tatsuhiko Takahasi, Korean Air regional manager for the Philippines Lee Chul Woo, reigning Miss Tourism Queen International Justine Gabionza, Traders Hotel Manila by Shangri-la general manager Andrea Mastellone, environmentalist and host of a lifestyle TV show in South Africa Catherine Constantinides, and Hong Kong and China Banking Corp. chief executive Warner Manning, chose the 5-feet-9 and 22-year-old commercial engineering student with a charming face, whistle-bait 34”-24”-34” figure, and “the most beautiful eyes among the candidates” according to beauty contest aficionados. The “Chilean charmer” is Hil Yesenia Hernandez Escobar!
