Miss America contestants sharpen skills

Clad in short denim skirts, boots and cowboy hats, the 52 women vying for the title of Miss America 2007 filed out of the Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel on Thursday afternoon and walked across the street to the ocean. Uncertainty crossed the faces of two contestants from inland states.

"Do I take my shoes off?" asked Melanie Murphy, Miss Ohio.

"I've never been to the beach before," Miss Colorado, Janie Allen, said.

Former Miss Louisiana 1996, Erica Schwarz, who is helping to mentor this year's contestants, assured the two that they could leave their boots on.
