HONG KONG — Television Broadcasts Ltd., Hong Kong's biggest terrestrial broadcaster, successfully sued a Web site in mainland China that distributed the network's programs _ including a Miss Hong Kong beauty pageant _ without permission, the broadcaster said Monday.

The portal http://www.21cn.com was ordered by the High Court in the southern province of Guangdong to pay TVB 200,000 yuan (US$25,174, euro19,861) in compensation, TVB said in a statement.

"TVB is most pleased with the judgment as it sets a precedent in China that copyrights should be respected," the broadcaster said about the July decision.

The Web site was illegally distributing the drama series "The Bund," the variety show "Gala Spectacular 2003" and "Miss Hong Kong Pageant 2003," among other programs, TVB said.
