WHS grad Magen Ellis chosen Miss Texas USA

Whitehouse High School graduate and University of Houston student Magen Ellis just keeps on winning. Her latest, and biggest win, came Sunday in Laredo, when she was selected as Miss Texas USA for 2007, topping a field of 132 of the most beautiful and talented women in Texas.

Ellis, who graduated from WHS in 2005 and is just 19, will have little time to enjoy the Miss Texas title, and the new car and gifts totaling over $100,000 that go with it. That's because she is "in training" to compete this spring in the Miss USA contest.

"I'm going to continue doing all the things I did to become Miss Texas," Ellis said in a an inter view that appeard in Monday's Laredo Morning Times.

Ellis beat out 56 contestants to win the title of Miss Houston USA in April. In each of her latest conquests, Ellis and her fellow competitors were judged in interview, evening gown, and swimsuit categories. In both the Miss Houston and Miss Texas pageants, Ellis won the coveted Miss Photogenic Award.

First runner-up in Sunday's pageant was Miss Southeast Texas Crystle Stewart. Second runner-up was Kendhal Beal, Miss Bay Area.

Placing the crown on Ellis' head was last year's Miss Texas USA winner, Lauren Lanning, who also represented Houston.

Ellis finished as first runnerup in her first pageant-Miss Tyler Teen. She later came back to win the title and went on to win the Miss Texas Teen title in 2004.

Ellis said she intends to use her Miss Texas USA title to focus attention on certain medical problems, such as the prevention of childhood obesity, and screening for ovarian and breast cancer.

At the University of Houston, Ellis studies communications and Spanish. She is the daughter of Tom and Celyna Ellis of Whitehouse.
