FORMER Miss Universe Jennifer Hawkins has offered some timely tips to the Queensland student who hopes to emulate her success at this year's pageant.

Erin McNaught, 24, is in Los Angeles preparing for next Sunday's competition and showing Hawkins the city's best boutiques.

"Just stay cool, calm, enjoy it and just be yourself," Hawkins told McNaught.

"As soon as you start trying too hard, that's when it all falls in a heap."

Hawkins, who is in Los Angeles shooting a story for The Great Outdoors, has a hosting role at this year's pageant.
