ELDRIDGE, Iowa — Sisters share many things in their life, from clothes to jewelry to special secrets to friends. Now a pair of Iowa sisters can say they share something else — the Miss Iowa crown.
Miss Cedar River, Emily Nicholas, 21, of Clear Lake, received the tiara proclaiming her as Miss Iowa 2006 during the Miss Iowa Scholarship Pageant on Saturday night at North Scott High School in Eldridge.
Her older sister, Carolyn Nicholas, 25, was Miss Iowa 2004.They are the daughters of Greg and Julie Nicholas of Clear Lake.It is the first time in the history of the Miss Iowa Pageant that a pair of sisters has won the crown, said pageant board member Kay McIntyre.Emily Nicholas said that her sister’s advice for the pageant was to be herself, “have a good time and don’t get caught up in competition with other girls.”That advice paid off, royally.Carolyn Nicholas, a graduate of Drake University School of Law, gave her younger sister a bit more advice for her coming year as Miss Iowa.
“She needs to make the most of every opportunity,” Carolyn said. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime thing. It was the best year of my life.”The sisters are close, and recorded a CD together in Nashville last summer.“It is wonderful to sing and share our love of music,” Carolyn said.
Julie Nicholas beamed proudly at her daughters, and commented on how much the Miss Iowa Pageant and the Miss America program have been good for the two.
“We’ve seen how it has brought out the best in both of them,” Julie said. “They learned confidence, poise, and they’ve had so many opportunities open up for them.
“They’re so proud to be from Iowa,” she added.Emily will continue focusing on her platform, “Character Counts — Be All That You Can Be,” during the coming year.
“I think it’s so important for kids to make better decisions,” she said. “Some kids don’t know right from wrong. They need good influences to be able to make good decisions. I try to be a positive role model to help people of all ages.”
As Miss Iowa 2006, Emily Nicholas will be receive $10,000 in scholarships and awards and will represent the state in January at the Miss America Pageant. Country Music Television, or CMT, will once again play host to the Miss American Pageant.
The theme will be Finding Miss America.Bill Lee, president of the Miss Iowa Scholarship Program board, said that the talent each year just gets better and better.
Tom Candler, business manager for Miss Iowa, said that the entertainment value is tremendous and that this year’s contestants really shown brightly.It was a wide variety of talent, from contestant Miss Johnson County’s Katie Snyder’s tap dance to “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” to Miss Clinton County Alisa White showing her range of operatic voice to Miss Eastern Iowa Devin Howell’s piano performance and everything in between from clarinet and saxophone solos to dramatic monologue.
