04jun06 THEY'RE beautiful, brainy and look breathtaking in a bikini – and these four Perth "glamazons" are hoping to follow in the footsteps of unknown-turned-superstar Jennifer Hawkins.

Edwina Nattrass, Lucy Nicol and Jessica Meins, all 22, and Leah Fuhrmann, 19, are WA's finalists in the Miss Universe national final.

The foursome, chosen from a field of 12, will fly to Melbourne on Wednesday for interviews and public appearances before a catwalk finale on Friday night.

Backstage, it wasn't all glamour for the contestants, who had to do quick changes and run down a laneway dressed only in barely-there bikinis and high heels.

"It was only about four degrees and we got a lot of strange looks from people who were walking past," Miss Nicol said.

"But we were all doing it together, so it was a laugh."

Miss Nattrass, a Channel 31 presenter and an ambassador with charity Save the Children Australia, said she was amazed to be named in the final four.

"I was pretty nervous up on the catwalk – I don't think any girl would get up there in a bikini without any nerves," she said.

Hawkins, now a TV identity, was an unknown Newcastle cheerleader when she was chosen as Australia's representative in Miss Universe 2004 and went on to win it.

A big contingent of friends and family, including Edwina's father, Perth Lord Mayor Peter Nattrass, and his partner, Federal Education Minister Julie Bishop, will make the trip from WA to support the finalists in Victoria.

They will compete with 16 other young women from around the country for the chance to represent Australia in the Miss Universe pageant in Los Angeles next month.
