Aussie pageant back to take on the universe

June 10, 2006

IT will become the best year of her life. In these troubled times, the hope for world peace will once again reign. And if not, well, a job on The Great Outdoors would be pretty good.

Effectively abolished as a relic of a bygone era just six years ago, the Miss Universe Australia contest, which picks the nation's contestant in Donald Trump's multi-million-dollar Miss Universe, is well and truly back.

And, of course, Jennifer Hawkins, the Newcastle model and cheerleader plucked from obscurity to tackle global issues such as AIDS, and, well, world peace, for a year, can take the credit.

While she has moved on to a career in television as a reporter on the Seven Network's travel show, her influence on the pageant world is strong. So beautiful, affable and nice, the "typical Aussie" Hawkins, who handed her Australian crown over to Perth health science student Michelle Guy, is credited with reviving the movement in Australia and overseas.

But last night it was Erin McNaught's turn. And in the fine tradition of the revamped pageant, the 24-year-old Gold Coast beauty has plenty of substance beyond her looks, too.

The Miss University 2005 winner is studying for a science degree at Queensland University of Technology, specialising in wildlife studies.

And while the Great Outdoors gig is taken for now, perhaps crocodile hunter Steve Irwin could help.

While working in a wildlife sanctuary for a couple of years, McNaught got some valuable experience.

"I held a two-year-old saltwater crocodile and a coastal carpet snake. The crocodile did a death roll on me," she said last year. "I loved the experience. Hopefully one day I can be a wildlife presenter like David Attenborough."

And true to form, last night when asked what was more important, money for sport or money for art, the canny McNaught told judges "money for the environment".
