Trump wants Emmitt for Miss USA pageant?

*Will “Dancing With the Stars” champ Emmitt Smith replace the pregnant Nancy O’Dell as the new host of Donald Trump’s Miss USA pageant? According to the New York Post, The Donald is looking to not only replace the blond "Access Hollywood" anchor with the former NFL star, but also change the format from two hosts to a single-hosted affair. New Miss America Relies on Christian Faith

By
Christian Post Reporter
Tue, Feb. 20 2007 08:46 AM ET

Newly crowned Miss America Lauren Nelson has only worn the winning sash for two weeks and looks toward traveling some 20,000 miles a month as America's role model. And what keeps her going is her faith.

Lauren Nelson is crowned Miss America on Jan. 29, 2007 in Las Vegas. Nelson will travel to cities across the nation throughout the year as a role model and wants her Christian faith to show in her actions.

"I grew up in church," Nelson told the United Methodist Service. "I was baptized in the Methodist Church and have gone since I was a baby."

Nelson, 20, grew up in Lawton, Okla., and is a member of Centenary United Methodist Church. She has competed in pageant since she was 16, mainly aspiring to become a Broadway performer. After winning her local city pageant and the state pageant to become Miss Teen Oklahoma, Nelson generated scholarship money for college and went on to the Miss America competition.

"I watched Miss America as a little girl and never thought that I could be one of the contestants in Miss America, much less Miss America herself," she said, according to UMNS.

Nelson, who has taken one year off from school at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond to compete, has won a $50,000 scholarship and is now taking another year off, traveling 20,000 miles this month and the following months.

In the midst of the busy schedule she is anticipating, Nelson said, "sometimes I am going to doubt myself, but I have to realize that God would not have put me in this position if He did not know that I could handle it."

As Miss America, Nelson believes she is representing "a strong role model," which is what society needs. And she hopes her Christian faith will show through her actions and the choices she makes.

BRANDI SHERWOOD'S MISS USA STORY PART 1

Reporter: Andrew Del Greco
Monday Feb 19, 2007

Idaho Falls native, Brandi Sherwood, is celebrating an anniversary this year. Andrew Del Greco interviewed Brandi at her home in California and has more.

Ten years ago, the Idaho Falls High graduate became the only woman to achieve an honor she still carries today.

At just three years of age, she knew.

Brandi Sherwood, Miss USA 1997: "I was sitting in front of the Miss America Pageant and I turned around and I said I'm gonna be here one day."

This year marks the 10th Anniversary that Idaho Falls native Brandi Sherwood made history, becoming the only woman to have held the title of Miss Teen USA and Miss USA. But becoming Miss USA almost didn't happen.

"I was the first-runner up in that pageant."

The winner, Miss Hawaii, went on to compete for Miss Universe, and the night of that pageant, Brandi got a phone call.

"It's my girlfriend from New York saying I'm watching the pageant live, she's in the final three and I think she's gonna win, she played it over the phone to me. So the girl wins and my mom slaps a big colander on my head and my boyfriend who's now my husband picks me flowers, I was so shocked!!"

It's happened only a few times in almost fifty years.

"I was like the vice president, the president moved on and I took over the duties."

Miss USA Tara Conner to Join Chicago as Roxie Hart?

According to the New York Post's Michael Riedel, disgraced beauty queen Tara Conner is in preparations to play Roxie Hart in the smash Broadway revival of Chicago.

Conner, who was recently in danger of losing her Miss USA crown after the disclosure of substance abuse problems, is currently rehearsing to play the merry murderess - although she will not officially cast as Roxie until she has proven she's up to the task. "Fran and Barry Weissler, the producers of the long-running revival, are not about to take a chance on her until they're confident she can handle the demands of a Broadway show, production sources said," states the article. Conner's singing is reportedly strong, although her dancing and acting are said to need improvement.

"Assuming both sides are comfortable, then this will be a win-win for all parties. We look forward to making a positive announcement about her joining the Chicago family," stated Barry Weissler.

If cast, Miss USA pageant owner Donald Trump - whose pardon of Conner's excesses was a hot topic late last year - will join Conner at a press conference to announce the casting. If accepted in the role, she will most likely join Chicago in the spring.

Are Travis Barker & Shanna Moakler Reconciling?

Travis & ShannaFormer Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker and his estranged wife Shanna Moakler have sparked reports they are reconciling after kissing in a Las Vegas club on Valentine's Day. The former Miss USA made an appearance at Pure Nightclub in Las Vegas to support Barker's new clothing line Famous Stars and Straps.

The couple announced they were separating in August and engaged in a vicious war of words on their MySpace websites.

According to E! news, Barker presented Moakler with three dozen roses and the couple were seen cuddling and kissing all night in the VIP area of the club. The amorous display comes just three months after Moakler threw herself a divorce party in another Las Vegas nightclub.

Faith reigns for new Miss America

Feb. 16, 2007

NOTE: A photograph and audio are available at http://umns.umc.org.

A UMNS Feature By Linda Green*

Lauren Nelson is relying on her faith to keep her grounded during the hectic year that lies ahead for the newly crowned Miss America.

Nelson, 20, a member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Lawton, Okla., won the coveted title on Jan. 29 in Las Vegas.

"It has been a whirlwind of a first two weeks," she said in a telephone interview with United Methodist News Service. "I have been in probably six different cities already, and I will probably travel about 20,000 miles a month. I am very excited about this opportunity."

Nelson took a year off from her studies at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond to compete first in the Oklahoma state pageant, which she won, and then to vie with 51 other contestants for the Miss America crown. Her long-term goals are to earn a master's degree in musical theater and perform on Broadway.

The daughter of Mark and Sherrell Nelson of Lawton, she entered the pageant circuit at 16 to fulfill her desire to sing and perform. After winning the Miss Teen Lawton (Okla.) pageant, she went on to win Miss Teen Oklahoma.

Miss Utah not afraid to be herself

By Sharon Haddock and Amy Choate-Nielsen

Deseret Morning News
HIGHLAND — Katie Millar was really an outside-the-box contestant for Miss America.
Katie Millar
Katie Millar
Not only was Miss Utah the only one to wear a one-piece, modest swimsuit in the physical fitness segment, but she played her electric violin with only three working strings. (The fourth broke just as she started the fast-paced "Souvenir d'Amerique.")
She put her $700 beaded gown up against dresses that easily cost $10,000 or more. It wasn't slit or low-cut, and where it criss-crossed in front, she sewed it up.
She's not accustomed to wearing makeup or flashy jewelry.
Add that to the fact that she's young — only 19 at the time of the competition — and this is her first time competing in any beauty pageants.
That didn't stop her from securing a place among the top 10 or from winning over not only judges but fellow contestants at the January event. (A number of the other women told the TV cameras they would vote for Miss Utah for Miss Congeniality.)
She was fine with fielding the traditional "Mormon" questions from pageant judges: What do you think of polygamy? What's your opinion on abortion? Would you vote for Mitt Romney for president?
Millar knows the path she is pursuing is different, maybe even seen as odd by the rest of the world.
"I wanted to represent BYU, my church, my family and be who I was. I told them at the pageant I'm probably the meatloaf mom from Utah," Millar said.
She was surprised to find herself at the Miss America Pageant. It was never one of her original goals.
"I'm not title-hungry," she said.

‘Discover Wisconsin’ marks 20 years on TV

By Warren Gerds
wgerds@greenbaypressgazette.com

If you’re looking for tips for day trips, one source with bundles is “Discover Wisconsin” — the TV show, radio show and Web site.

“Discover Wisconsin” has been promoting the state for 20 years on TV.

The show will mark its milestone Saturday and Sunday with an episode that airs at various times on stations throughout Wisconsin and seven other states. In Green Bay, it is broadcast regularly at 5 p.m. Saturday on WGBA, Channel 26.

The anniversary edition will recount the origins of the show (aboard a fishing boat) and provide a sampler of stories and destinations as well as memories from hosts past and present.

“My favorite part is we show some of the really strange and unusual attractions you can see in the state,” said Stephanie Klett, the former Miss Wisconsin who has hosted the show for 14 years.

“One attraction is the Rock in the House in Fountain City. Not House on the Rock (near Spring Green). This is a rock in the house. It’s a 55-ton boulder that fell into a home, right into the living room.”
