LOCATION: Hollywood THE SKINNY: ABC is rewarding its top-rated new show of the season, UGLY BETTY, with an order for nine additional episodes, making for a full season’s worth of shows. UGLY BETTY has posted the best ratings of any new fall show, and has given ABC its highest numbers in 13 years for a scripted show that’s occupied the Thursday 8 p.m. timeslot. O.K., so that last part might be a bit too specific to really get excited about, but it’s good news for star America Ferrera (who plays Betty), and certainly for co-star Vanessa Williams, the former Miss America whose last series effort was the little-seen SOUTH BEACH on the no-longer seen UPN network. | |
In three years, Barbados could be hosting the Miss Universe show, utilising the physical infrastructure currently being put in place for the hosting of Cricket World Cup (CWC) 2007. That is according to Miss Barbados Universe franchise holder and owner of S.C.O.U.T Model Management Candi Nicholls who spoke to the Barbados Advocate yesterday evening at the launch of this years show at Aqua Restaurant, Hastings, Christ Church.
Similar sentiments were expressed by Project Development Officer with the National Cultural Foundation (NCF) Ian Walcott, who also told the Barbados Advocate that his organisation, which is providing technical assistance for this years show, will collaborate on the bid for Barbados to host the show by 2009.

There is something very mesmerizing and captivating about beauty queens. Regardless of what people may say, I was was thrown right into the middle of all of it. My first real life experience with a Miss Universe was July 2004, at a party in Sydney that Jennifer Hawkins, the Australian Miss Universe of that year just so happened to attend. She was immaculate; flawless from top to bottom. She was as down to earth as any one of us, yet commanded the attention of every single person in the room. She only said a few words to me, I was too much in awe to remember exactly but it was from that moment on I knew that this lady, woman, queen was someone I wanted to emulate and one day I would know what it felt like to represent the magnificence of a woman for an entire country. My time came for me in 2006 when I won the Miss Sri Lanka title. It was the most number of emotions in one moment I'd ever felt. The countdown to the pageant was nail biting. I'm a relatively positive person but no amount of confidence can prepare you for competition of this kind. I didn't realize my own strength or that of my family and friends till I experienced the pageant. Yearning so badly for a chance to carry my country's flag up high in an international arena made the crown so much more treasured. I remember the very first thought that came into my head when they called out my name, even though it was extremely difficult to think at that time, it was more or less what 'my people have given me, they have entrusted me, with representing the country'. This meant a whole lot to me as having spent a large part of my life abroad, for Sri Lanka to believe in me and give me the chance, was a feeling of so much gratitude and pride in my people. FORMER Miss Universe Dayanara Torres returns to the Philippines as the face of Beverly Hills 6750, a new surgical center specializing in plastic surgery in Makati City.
Presidential Chief of Staff Michael Defensor expressed his optimism about Torres’s decision to endorse the country’s booming medical tourism industry.
“We are encouraged by Miss Torres's decision to endorse a local company, and the Philippines as a whole, as a hub of wellness and rejuvenation,” Defensor said.
“As an international celebrity, she will help attract interest for the country. I think she has the credibility to pull in the tourists and she has a strong affinity with Filipinos,” he added.

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Rachel Smith of Clarksville has been crowned the new Miss Tennessee USA 2007 and will go on to compete in the Miss USA pageant.
First runner-up in the Miss Tennessee USA pageant was Tyre Nelson, 24, of Antioch, and second runner-up was Karmen Cordell, 22, of Sevierville.
They were among 65 women who competed for Miss Tennessee on Saturday.
Smith gets a $2,500 scholarship to attend Austin Peay State University and full tuition to attend the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Crowned on Saturday as Miss Tennessee Teen USA was Macy Erwin, a 16-year-old Tyler Academy junior from Chattanooga. First runner-up was Brie'Anna Garrison, of Clinton, and Keriann Johnson, of Orinda, was named second runner-up.
Erwin will go onto compete in the Miss Teen USA pageant.

Healthy Family Day will be held 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at the YMCA, 90 W. Second St.
Healthy Family Day, sponsored by Aurora, K107 and the YMCA, was created to provide health and safety education for area families through a fun and interactive environment. The event is free and open to the public.
Pat Mocshea will present "Happy, Healthy and Wise," a live interactive show, at 1 p.m. Guests will have the opportunity to meet Miss Wisconsin Megan Coffey from 2 to 4 p.m., with Best Buy providing photos. Participants will also have the opportunity to experience the first ever "ginormous" rain gutter sundae at 4 p.m., complements of Culver's.

OSHKOSH — The Miss Wisconsin Scholarship Pageant has a dedicated and seasoned staff for the annual event held at Alberta Kimball Auditorium in Oshkosh.
At the heart of it the past 18 years were Sue Captain and John Schultz Jr., who had been co-executive directors of the pageant since 1988. The untimely death of Schultz in early August left pageant officials with a decision to make: whether they would replace Schultz or continue under the leadership of Captain.
The Miss Wisconsin Organization board of directors decided to go with Captain as the sole executive director of the pageant.
Captain said she's fine with the decision and that she has a lot of help in running the June pageant, which includes a parade in downtown Oshkosh.
"We have a seasoned board of directors and a lot of people who have been working with the pageant for years," Captain said. "Our Miss Wisconsin production crew has also been with us for a long time. We have a great group of people, who have been supportive and they know what they're doing. Everybody helps each other."
Those who knew Schultz said he offered much to the pageant and he will not be forgotten.
Mary Lou Lewis, a member of the Miss Wisconsin Organization board of directors, said Schultz was dedicated to his work with the pageant.
"His baby was to check with everyone in the auditorium to make sure things were going fine on show nights, even down to the auxiliary police who were doing the parking," Lewis said.
