Live from Planet Hollywood, Las Vegas, on TLC

Atlantic City, NJ, January 3, 2008– 2008 Miss America Live! promises to be an exciting event with the announcement of the strikingly diverse panel of national judges. This year’s panel of seven esteemed judges includes a legendary Olympic athlete, an edgy fashion designer, Hollywood’s hottest casting director, the editor of a trendy magazine, a successful entrepreneur, one of CNN’s most popular newscasters and today’s favorite fitness trainer. They will evaluate the contestants from the preliminaries through the final night of competition, which will be premiering live from Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas on Saturday, January 26, 2008 8:00PM ET live/PT tape-delayed, exclusively on TLC. The judges were announced by Sam Haskell, Chairman of the Board for the Miss America Organization (MAO), Art McMaster, President and CEO of MAO, and Anthony Eaton, Producer of 2008 Miss America Live! This year’s panel of judges is comprised of experts in each of the fields that a young woman must excel in, in order to be named Miss America. Miss America must be beautiful, talented, intelligent and well-spoken, a leader, have a commitment to her community, be contemporary in her style and fashion - a relatable and individual ‘it girl’ who can connect with today’s modern woman, as well as being physically fit. To determine who will be Miss America 2008 the following panel of judges has been selected:

From the Field of Beauty and Fashion - Trace Ayala – This Memphis-born fashion designer is the co-founder of William Rast denim with his childhood friend, Justin Timberlake. Ayala designs comfortable and stylish denim with quality fabrics and a well-designed fit.

From the Field of Community Service - Jackie Joyner-Kersee – Considered one of the greatest athletes of all time, Joyner-Kersee is the first woman to win back-to-back gold medals in the seven disciplined event heptathlon. Since retiring from competition, Joyner-Kersee has devoted herself to giving back to her community. As Founder and Chairperson of the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation, she spearheaded fundraising efforts to collect more than $12 million to build a safe haven for young people.

From the Field of Talent – JASON La PADURA
– This native New Yorker is the casting genius behind the Disney Channel phenomenon “High School Musical” and will soon begin work on the feature film, “High School Musical 3.” He is currently casting the NBC hit “Heroes” and CBS’ “Cane.”

From the Field of Fitness - Kim Lyons – As a star of NBC’s hit show, “The Biggest Loser,” Lyons exemplifies fitness. Lyon’s first book will be published in January 2008. She is also featured in the bestselling The Biggest Loser Cookbook, and “The Biggest Loser” Workout DVDs.

From the Communications/Interview Field - Robin Meade – As the lead news anchor for Headline News’ morning show, “Morning Express with Robin Meade,” she has anchored the network’s coverage of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Before joining CNN, Meade worked at NBC Chicago where she covered the 1996 Olympics, which included reporting on the Centennial Olympic Park bombing. From the Field of Leadership Development - James Arthur Ray – Ray is the President and CEO of James Ray International, a multi-million dollar corporation dedicated to teaching individuals to create wealth in all areas of their lives: financially, relationally, intellectually, physically, and spiritually. He has been featured on Extra, The Today Show, Larry King Live, and the Oprah Winfrey Show for The Secret.

This year, America has the opportunity to select a surprise 16th pageant finalist with Miss America: America’s Choice, an online competition that allows viewers to vote for their favorite Miss America contestant. Fans can vote by visiting www.tlc.com/missamerica beginning on Friday, January 4, after the first episode of TLC’s new reality special, MISS AMERICA: REALITY CHECK and through the final episode on Saturday, January 26 (3am EST). The contestant with the most votes, who is not already included as a top 15 finalist, will be chosen as “America’s Choice,” and be revealed during the MISS AMERICA LIVE! finale.

MISS AMERICA: REALITY CHECK premieres January 4, at 10 PM (ET/PT) and airs consecutive Friday nights leading up to the MISS AMERICA LIVE! finale on January 26. Hosted by Michael Urie, the four-part series is designed to get these 52 state winners to forget everything they’ve learned in “pageant schools” over the years…the walk…the talk…the hairspray…and prepare them for the final competition to select Miss America 2008…the relatable “it girl” who can connect with today’s modern woman.

By Christopher Rocchio, 01/03/2008

Jill and Nicole learned that winning a beauty pageant requires more than just looking good, as the Delaware mother/daughter duo became the fourth team eliminated from Crowned: The Mother of All Pageants during last night's broadcast of The CW reality series.

"I'm disappointed in myself because I could have done a lot better," explained Jill following her team's elimination. "But I really learned to focus more on your inner beauty."

From the Beauties of America blog: Elf Louise Gift Wrapping!

I got pretty good at wrapping by the end of the night!!
12-6-07
This was our first experience with wrapping gifts for Elf Louise, after the radiothon we were so pumped about Christmas, we had to get in on this fun! So one of the coordinators invited us to come wrap gifts for the receiving families! When I thought about what we were going to do, I never expected what we stumbled upon. There were ROWS and ROWS of gifts all separated by age division. And it was your job to pick out what each child was going to recieve for Christmas from Santa! It felt so good to know that you were going to have such a large impact on a child's Christmas experience. These gifts however, were not nintendo games or a Wii or an Ipod but simple gifts that these children would appreciate, it really made me greatful for what I am blessed with. I will definately be back to help again next year! :)

From Thailand...

HOW MUCH DID WE PAY OUR BEAUTY QUEENS LAST YEAR?

It pays to be a beauty queen, doesn’t it? Now that the pageant season is over, how much did we pay our “queens” in 2007?

Miss Malaysia-World took home RM12,000 (US$3,600) cash, some perks and that’s it! Miss Malaysia-Universe even got way, way lower at RM5,000 (US$1,500) Pfft! Talk about attracting “quality” contestants heh?

Miss Indonesia-Universe got 20 million Rupiah (US$2,100) and a 15 million Rupiah (US$1,500) diamond ring, a house and lot and a Yamaha motorcycle! What? A motorcycle? Miss Indonesia-World got 50 million Rupiah (US$5,300) in cash and some other perks not worth mentioning. Gosh! Their Indonesian Idol got 150 million (US$16,000) cash prize!

Miss Philippines-World, Universe, International and Earth got Php250,000 (US$5,000) each.

Miss Singapore Universe got SG$25,000 (US$17,500) in cash and Miss Earth Singapore got SG$10,000 (US$7,000). That’s all and some prizes not worth mentioning.

Who pays the most? And who got the most prizes?

Miss Thailand-World took home 1 million Baht (US$34,000) in cash! PLUS a diamond necklace worth 800,000 Baht (US$27,000), a brand new Toyota Camry (US$30,000) and a house and lot. Oh sweetie, these are just the major prizes. She got more than that! A total package of almost 5 million Baht or US$168,000! That’s more than the Miss World prize money!

Miss Thailand-Universe also took home 1 million Baht (US$34,000) in cash and a US$10,000 diamond necklace, a US$20,000 diamond crown and a brand new Honda CRV worth 1.25 million Baht (US$42,000). That’s more than Miss Universe’s 1-year salary! (Miss Universe doesn’t have prize money).

Unlike other countries that pass on their worthless rhinestone junk of a crown…please note that in Thailand, our beauty queens get to keep their crowns as part of the prizes.

While others are sooo desperate to win an international title (for bigger prizes), Thai beauty queens are just in it for the “duty”. HELLO sweetie! She just became a multi-millionaire a few months ago…why would she care to “desperately” compete abroad?

Holiday Hound Pet Contest!

Holiday Hound Pet Contest!

The winner!
America's Teen, Santa, and Miss Helotes
America's Teen 2007

12-16-07
I received an email a few weeks prior to this contest, asking me to judge this Holiday Hound Pet Contest. A local feed store, Boxcar Feed Supply was sponsoring the winner with a year supply of food! So on December sixteenth in Helotes, TX one lucky dog would receive this generous prize! It was up to Santa, America's Teen (me :) ), and Alyssa Hacker Miss Helotes to decide who would win! We were briefed on the criteria, which basically consisted of looking the cutest in their Christmas Attire! There were around twenty dogs in the contest and they were all SO cute! It was a hard decision, but Chip the 9 month old Tea Cup Chihuahua won. This was to my dismay!! :) I was voting for Daisy Mae, a 7 month old Boxer puppy to win, she was adorable! Chip was cute as well though, so we congratulated the pups, and continued the day shopping around downtown Helotes. I was honored to have been chosen as a judge!

Brenda and Heather from 'Crowned' interviewed on Buddy TV

Heather and BrendaFormerly known as the Blonde Bombshells, these two Goal Driven Gals hail from Parkersburg, West Virginia. They wanted to enter the Crowned competition to prove that there is a lot more substance to them than just their looks. Throughout their stay, mom Brenda and daughter Heather were able to use their sunny dispositions and self-deprecating senses of humor to defuse an otherwise tense competition house.

Brenda and Heather spoke to BuddyTV today about their experience on Crowned and what the feud inside the house was really like. Below, you will find an mp3 file and a complete transcript of the interview.

Hey everybody. This is Debbie at BuddyTV, and today I'm talking to Brenda and Heather, the Goal Driven Gals, from Crowned. So, what was it that made you want to be on Crowned in the first place?

Heather: I thought that we should do Crowned to bring us closer together. I went away to college, I've been in school for about six years now, and throughout that timeframe, I haven't been able to spend a lot of time with my mother, and I just thought it would be a great opportunity and a chance to have fun. And, of course, maybe win the 100,000 dollars. [laughter]

Beauty tips from Miss Arizona

Jill Richards/The Arizona Republic

Hair and makeup by Jacklyn Whitehead.

Stephanie Armenta
The Arizona Republic
Jan. 11, 2008 12:00 AM Many of us watched it as little girls, wishing and hoping to someday be in their shoes. You know exactly what we're talking about: the Miss America Pageant. We caught up with our very own Miss Arizona, Nicole Turner, 24, who will compete in the 2008 Miss America Pageant on Jan. 26. Watch it on the TLC channel at 8 p.m.

Turner talked to us about who inspired her, beauty pageant tricks and her favorite beauty products.

Question: Can you describe what it was like when you were announced Miss Arizona?

Answer: I just remember standing there praying and saying, "Please make it be my time. Please make it be. This is my last chance; it's now or never." It was a dream come true. This was my last chance at competing for the title of Miss Arizona because I aged out. I guess it's like what they say, the third time's the charm.

Q: Whom are you influenced or inspired by?

A: One of the greatest influences in my life has been my high-school dance teacher, Mrs. Kenyon. I graduated high school almost seven years ago and still keep in contact with her. She's even coming to the Miss America Pageant in Las Vegas. Mrs. Kenyon was the one who pushed me to come out of my shell and express myself. She really let me be creative and show my expressive side. I would never be able to go out there at Miss America and dance on that stage all by myself if it wasn't for her.

Q: Can you give away a few beauty secrets or tricks of the pageant trade?

A: Wash your hair every other day. Carry blush and MAC lip gloss with you everywhere you go.

Queen strives to restore Miss America's luster

AMANDA PETRUCELLI
Tribune Correspondent

Nicole Rash is not like the other girls. Really.

For starters, Miss Indiana has her motorcycle license, likes to camp and is fluent in Spanish. (She was an exchange student to both Bolivia and Chile.)

"I can get my hands dirty. It's not like I'm a prim, proper debutante who sits in the house all day," the 2003 Plymouth High School graduate says.

And if you don't believe she's not a "big-haired, pageant girl," you'll get a chance to get to know her on the Miss America Pageant's "Reality Check" series, starting at 10 p.m. Friday on TLC.

"It's really fun," the 23-year-old Rash says. "We had a lot of fun with it. There's some drama with it."

For the series, she says, all state titleholders were housed in the Hollywood home where "The Biggest Loser" was filmed.

No TV, no music and no Internet.

"It's a really, really gorgeous, huge property -- a really nice house," Rash says, "but for 52 girls, we had seven bathrooms."

Contestants are presented with challenges, she says, and Hollywood icons show up with tips about how to be the next "It Girl."

"We're just trying to appeal to when Miss America was at its highest point," Rash says. "When little girls wanted to be Miss America."

Rash notes that a woman can be relevant, fashionable and pretty but not have to get into the trouble of Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan to make headlines.

She works with the Children's Miracle Network, which is the national platform of the pageant and is affiliated with Indianapolis' Riley Hospital for Children.

As the Las Vegas pageant date looms, you can find Miss Indiana substitute teaching in the Plymouth school system. The daughter of Bill and Cindy Rash, longtime LaPaz/Plymouth residents, Rash's personal platform is "breaking down language barriers."

"Miss America is so much more than just about the pageant," she says.

But don't worry boys: Rash says there will be swimsuits in the reality show.

Tune in.

Beauty queen-law clerk charged with kidnap-torture

Associated Press

Jan. 1, 2007 09:40 AM

TUCSON - A beauty pageant winner and law school student clerking for a federal judge faces charges that she kidnapped and tortured an ex-boyfriend.

Kumari Fulbright, 25, was indicted with three men Dec. 18 by a Pima County Superior Court grand jury on charges of kidnapping, armed robbery, aggravated robbery and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, the Arizona Daily Star reported.

Fulbright, 25, was Miss Pima County in 2005 and Miss Desert Sun in 2006, and sought the title of Miss Arizona during those years.

She also clerked for U.S. District Judge Raner Collins as a University of Arizona law school student, the newspaper said.

It said the alleged assailants held a 24-year-old man captive for 10 hours on Dec. 8 while robbing and torturing him.

Court documents said the foursome tied the man up with plastic cable ties and duct tape, holding him at two Tucson homes, during which time they pointed handguns at him, threatened his life, stole his cell phone, briefcase and wallet, taking between $500 and $600.

The newspaper also said the documents accused Fulbright of biting him several times, sticking a butcher knife in his ear, saying she was going to kill him and pointing a pistol at him.

The Star said after eight to 10 hours, the victim grabbed Fulbright's gun, which went off, and he fled the house screaming for help.

Our real wish list for the New Year

The New Year is a time for fresh beginnings. GrĂ¡inne McCarry talks to five well-known people about their hopes and aspirations for the year ahead

Monday, December 31, 2007

2007 was an unforgettable year for Belfast girl Melissa Patton. Overnight she went from being an air hostess to Miss Northern Ireland. She came back two weeks ago from China where she took part in the world's biggest beauty pageant, Miss World. She says:

For 2008 I'm making a resolution to stop spending my money on things I don't need. I'm addicted to shopping - I'm a complete shopaholic. I'm always buying new make-up and shoes - they're my real weaknesses.
