Miss Universe rigged in Venezuela`s favour: Former Miss Brazil

This is a cliche...a non-finalist complaining a pageant is rigged. Don't do it.
Former Miss Brazil Adalgisa Colombo has said that this year`s Miss Universe pageant, which was won by Miss Venezuela Stefania Fernandez, was "rigged" in favour of Venezuela that has taken the last two titles.
"It was rigged. The contest was very dumb, very commercial, with the special interests of (pageant co-owner) Donald Trump, who must have interests in Venezuela," Colombo told the O Globo newspaper`s online edition.
Colombo, who was Miss Brazil 1958, said her country`s representative this year, Larissa Costa, was one of the favourites and should have been one of the 10 semifinalists, but she did not even make the final 15.
The former beauty queen said her favourite contestant in this year`s pageant was Miss Dominican Republic Ada Aimee de la Cruz, who made it to the final three.

Beauty in Venezuela is matter of pride, and scalpels

clipped from www.google.com

CARACAS — Venezuela's afterglow of winning yet another Miss Universe crown has not only illuminated national pride in its Latin beauties -- but also its women's widespread recourse to cosmetic surgery.

Surgical enhancement to the body has become such a norm in the South American nation that it has emerged as a top destination for "scalpel tourism" by foreigners looking for a lift or new contours at a cheaper price.

"There are patients who come from Colombia, the United States, Ecuador, the Caribbean islands... They have surgery and then spend a few days on vacation," explained Rosi Oyon, head of a French subsidiary selling silicon brest implants.

For non-Venezuelans visiting to improve their neckline, the difference in cost can be significant. In Caracas, breast enlargement goes for around 2,500 dollars, compared to several thousand more in other countries.

Miss America 2009 Katie Stam Demonstrates Her Volunteer Spirit at American Legion National Convention

Miss America 2009 Katie Stam was on hand at the American Legion National Convention in Louisville, KY this week to support their community service initiatives and talk about her own volunteering experiences.

On Sunday, Katie spoke to the Sons of the American Legion about the importance of community service and rode in the National Convention Parade in Downtown Louisville.

The next day she spoke to the America Legion Auxiliary and commended them for initiating their new service project, Call to Service Corps, which is designed to enhance the capacity of Auxiliary to generate volunteer service targeted toward poverty alleviation by and for military veteran families.

On her final day in Louisville, Katie had the wonderful opportunity to sing the National Anthem at the National Convention Opening Ceremonies. Later that evening she had the honor of attending the National Commander's Head Table Reception and Banquet.

The convention was a great opportunity for Katie to honor the American Legion and promote her passion for community service and involvement!

Miss Plastic Surgery: Cosmetic surgery is centre of Hungary pageant

clipped from www.telegraph.co.uk

A quick recap of MAOT

clipped from missga2009.blog.com

Last week I made an exciting trip to Orlando to support Miss Georgia’s Outstanding Teen, Brianna Godshalk, as she competed at Miss America’s Outstanding Teen. First off, Brianna performed brilliantly and truly represented Georgia well! She also earned a full scholarship to Troy State University in Alabama, which I know she (and her parents) are thrilled about!

Today, I’m going scuba diving at the Georgia Aquarium! I am so very excited about this and have to say many thanks to the Miss Georgia Board, the Georgia Aquarium, and the Atlanta Georgia Constitution for setting this up. I gave the Miss Georgia Board a “bucket list” of things I wanted to do during my year as Miss Georgia, and this is the first item we have accomplished! Look for a spread in the AJC sometime this week!

MISS AMERICA “TRUMPS” MISS UNIVERSE

Donald Trump on the David Letterman Show this week said that you only have to be beautiful to win Miss Universe.  The Donald dismissed the Miss America Pageant and its scholarship program when Letterman brought it up.  Here’s the clip.

Miss USA is actually an offshoot of the Miss America Pageant. The Catalina Swimsuit Company, a sponsor of the Miss America Pageant in the 1950’s, walked off in a huff when Yolanda Betbeze, Miss America 1951, a serious opera singer, refused to model the sponsor’s swimsuits during her reign. She told them to start their own pageant – and they did.

Yes, I’ll watch Miss Universe on NBC this weekend, and I’ll cheer on the winner. These young women still show admirable qualities of persistence and discipline. But frankly, they’re no Miss America.

Miss Universe 2009 Crown Fell!

Did anyone watch the Miss Universe 2009 Pageant Sunday night? I sure did. It has been years since I last watched a Miss Universe or any beauty pageant for that matter live on television. I recall my elementary school days when I used to watch these pageants year after year and admire these pretty ladies parading around in swimsuits and gowns with their gorgeous figures. I guess as I mature, these pageants are less entertaining to me.
I recalled trying out for the local Miss Universe pageant when I was 19....didn't make it very far in the competition but still at least I had a slight taste of it. There weren't any cat fights but there were certainly some very mean contestants who were just bullies. They got special attention, the best selection of sponsored clothing, jewelry, swimsuits, make up artists....and the list just goes on. Anyway, that's not what this blog post is all about. It's about the Miss Universe crown falling...check out this video! Click here.

Fabulous 40s? Oh Yeah!!

We've all heard the phrase "Fabulous 40s." Someone asked me just the other day, "Is being in your 40s really fabulous?" I quickly responded without hesitation, "Absolutely, you better believe it is!" And what could be more fabulous than being crowned America's 40s?
I can't believe it's been just a little over a week since I received the honor of being crowned America's 40s. I am still on cloud nine. A dream came true for me and it is an opportunity that I will always treasure.
It means so much to me to be your America's 40s. I promise to represent all of you with honor and pride. I have already scheduled many appearances and look forward to many, many more over the next year, so please check back for pictures and updates.

Dear Friends,

What an incredible month it has been for me! July flew by so fast, I can hardly believe August is almost ending. I guess what they say is true, time flies when you’re having fun! I started off the month of July with a national interview on The 700 Club and was interviewed by co-host and Miss America 1973 Terry Meeuwsen about her year of service. It was an amazing interview! If you missed it, visit: http://www.cbn.com/media/index.aspx?s=/vod/SUB65_KatieStam_070909_WS to check it out!

I’m now in Kentucky for the National American Legion Convention! I’ll be back in Indiana this weekend to sing the National Anthem at the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix! Until next time… stay safe and enjoy the rest of your summer!

Warmest wishes,

Sunday Morning

Well to my surprise I was awakened by my son yelling throughout the house "mom you're in the newspaper, mom you're in the newspaper!" I was so excited to see the article that Holly wrote covering my achievement as America's 30's national queen.

Here is the article which I am extremely grateful for! But I do have to make 2 corrections which will be restated in the paper later this week. It is not my brother that was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year, it was my father-in-law and my official title is not Mrs. America, it is America's 30's BOA!

Enjoy the article!

Beauties of America Nationals

Sorry I haven't updated in a while. I have been super busy this month preparing for both the Beauties of America Nationals and my company's annual sales meeting that kicks off tomorrow.

Despite the threat of rain the entire weekend, Myrtle Beach was beautiful.

I really enjoyed seeing all my BOA sisters and finally getting to meet some of them face to face. Everyone was very beautiful and it was clear the judges had their work cut out for them as they picked the winners from this extrordinary group of women.

As always, Jennifer put on a really great show. I was excited to be a part of the 25th anniversary of such a wonderful system.

I did not place, but did earn a media award for my 40+ hours of personal appearances.

I will add pictures as they become available.

As many of you know, my husband Matt is Lieutenant of Detectives with The Powder Springs Police Department, which is a 40-man department within Cobb County. He is also the commander of the Honor Guard Unit. The department is in desperate need of funds to buy uniforms for its 6-person Honor Guard. The city cut all expenses for the police department this year, so the guard is hosting a fundraiser to help get uniforms on their own.
The primary role for honor guards is to provide funeral honors for fallen officers. Honor guards may also serve as the "guardians of the colors" by displaying and escorting the state and national flag on ceremonial occasions at official city functions as directed by the Chief of Police. They are ambassadors to the public, presenting a positive image of their service, and assisting with the recruiting effort.
Matt and I personally thank you for supporting those who put their lives’ on-the-line everyday for our safety and the well-being of our communities.

2009 Beauties of America's 50s Queen Debra Gilmour Surprises Special Madison House Resident

Since becoming 2009 Beauties of America 50s national titleholder many opportunities from glamourous to gritty have come my way.
Recently,  I was contacted by a dedicated behavioral health professional who works with cognitive and developmentally disabled adults.  She was aware of a very special person in her span of care who just loves everything related to pageants.  She asked if I would be willing to surprise "Bill" with a visit from a real pageant queen with a crown.
Bill was nearly in tears when I opened my crown box and he saw the beautiful Beauties of America 25th anniversary national crown.  He was thrilled at the chance to wear my state crown and sash. As he took me for a tour of his residence (shared with four other adults and care giving staff) he excitedly shared his collection of photographs of beautiful gowns and queenly celebrities.
The Bills of the world are truly what being a pageant queen are all about.

APPLE VALLEY • There’s a new queen among us and she lives in Apple Valley.

Jessica Cassidy was crowned Queen of America’s 30s at the Beauties of America pageant in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The competition is divided by decade, with winners for teens, 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s.

“I thought I would win first runner-up. That’s how I usually place,” Cassidy said. “When they were announcing the winner and they called my name, I was shocked.”

But in another way, she was ready. Cassidy has been serving as Mrs. California in the Beauties of America pageant system since October. In that time, she estimates, she’s put in 70 to 75 hours of community service, giving speeches and making public appearances.

“When you’re a state-title holder, I think it’s important that you represent yourself the way you would represent yourself nationally,” Cassidy said.

“My brother was diagnosed (with cancer) earlier this year,” Cassidy said, “so that one was really close to my heart.”

Victim's Voices

Be sure to read this entire article. Ang is right on the money--Chris Brown got off easy and this is just wrong!

I know I haven't updated in quite sometime and for that I apologize. I have been crazy busy with a myriad of things which I will post about asap. But today something in the form of Chris Brown crawled in my craw and I had to post about. So bare with me while I rant.
If you beat a dog you get 18 months in jail among other things. If you beat a woman you get 5 years probation and roughly $5500 in dollars. Does this seem at all bass ackward to anyone else? Now before PETA jumps on my case I'm not encouraging cruelty to animals. I am simply saying that shouldn't we expect that women and children be treated at least as well as they are?
Chris Brown received his "verdict" today for beating Rhianna.
From TMZ.com
Chris Brown was sentenced to 5 years probation and 6 months hard labor.
The judge sentenced Brown to perform hard labor at the Commonwealth Catholic Charities in Richmond, VA, where he must also take a 52-week domestic violence course.

Miss N.C. International finds joy in volunteering

While many little girls dream of someday donning a pageant queen’s crown, Summerfield’s Julie Tesh, Miss North Carolina International, wasn’t inspired to enter the pageant life until she was a freshman in college at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
“I’d never thought about doing pageants before,” says 23-year-old Tesh, who will graduate in December with undergraduate degrees in political science and communications. “I just jumped in, and I happened to do well, and I kept doing it. It’s been great.”
Tesh also volunteers in the Mentoring of Children of Prisoners Program, and works weekly with a child whose father is currently incarcerated. She volunteered in Washington, D.C., from August to December 2008, where she served as an intern in the legislative branch, then in the executive Office of the President in political affairs. Previously, she interned at U.S. Congressman Howard Coble’s office.

First Stop for 2009 Beauties of America's 50s Queen Debra Gilmour? New York City and MORE Magazine!

What does a girl do after winning the national Beauties of America 50s title?  For me it was a quick trip to New York City for a photo shoot with MORE Magazine.  (Yes, that's me sans makeup sitting in the chair-not as glamourous as the previous few days!)
This trip was also a chance to catch up with some of my family members living in the city.  In the morning, my cousin Mark Egyud his wife Sherri, and two of their children Ruby and Alex, met me at the Maritime Hotel for a quick jaunt to Chelsea Square for lunch and a primer on all the happenings in our family.  I wished I had more time to spend with them and am trying to plan another trip, soon.
All in all it has been an amazing few days with much more (no pun intended) in store!  As soon as I know the release date for the MORE Magazine edition with my feature page, I'll be certain to alert you.  Be on the look out for a newsstand near you!

Raina and Gia - not even  a month after being crowned the 2009 Arizona Princess(Gia) and the 2009 Arizona Jr. Preteen( Raina), both girls and their parents made headlines in Arizona and caught the eye of Fox 10 news who brought them in to the studio to film a quick segment about their pageant experience.

Debra Gilmour Selected 2009 Beauties of America's 50s

Hearing those words, well it was almost surreal.  The weekend was such a fun, low stress event that it didn't really feel like a competition.  With such an accomplished and beautiful group of women in my division, I was humbled and honored to be selected as America's 50s representative for 2009.

The best part of the pageant had to be sharing a room with one very special lady, Oregon's 40s, Deanna Bebeau. Deanna was a wonderful roomie, a supportive friend, and a truly lovely person with which to share this experience.
The west coast ladies (seen here: Deanna Bebeau-Oregon's 40s, Ginny Donahoe-Washinton's 50s, Janice Richars-Evergreen's 50s, Carol Milliron of Washington-2008 America's 50s, me, and Jessica Cassidy-California's 30 and 2009 America's 30s winner!) plan to get together in the future to laugh and share the stories of our special adventure.

Interview Day & Planet Hollywood At Beauties of America

The day began with personal interviews with the official judges.  After that it was rehearsal time.  Then, the business of the day complete, it was time for more fun, again.
Our fabulous dinner was followed by a giant chocolate chip cookie for dessert! NOTE: Despite rumors to the contrary, I did NOT eat five cookies at dinner!  The staff did however give me four cookies to take home and we will just leave it at that!
Then it was another limo ride to the hotel for an early bedtime to get ready for finals the following day.

Beauties of America Queens Turn Rock Stars At Hard Rock Cafe!

After orientation the ladies had a bit of down time to get ready for their rock star debuts at the Hard Rock Cafe`!
As the ladies waited their turns for luxury transport, cameras were snapping in every direction.  Tim Kretschmann of Pageant Cast arrived to cover the pageant for his program and  became "unofficial" photographer as the ladies asked him to take their photos.
My pick for the evening's best dressed was Pinky Carter, Chesapeake Bay's 30s.  Pinky lived up to her name throughout the weekend in shades of the color looking fabulous in every selection (seen in her pink dress).
After dinner it was back to the hotel in our limo.
Then it was back to pageant HQ for a workshop (that is me, Michele Sharpe and Deanna Bebeau all wearing our Crown Chic jogging suits as we head to the workshop!) and then a good night's rest for competition day.

Interviewing the Pageant Coach, Valerie Hayes™

clipped from www.examiner.com

“Learning the basic skills to compete in a pageant is not rocket science” says the Pageant Coach™, Valerie Hayes, “but mastering the skills to win one is.” How does she know this? As a wife of one, a mother of two and five toy poodles and a heart made of gold, Valerie Hayes has coached winning contestants to the major pageants as well as for many local pageants in the United States and the world.

The Pageants Examiner was able to spend some time with Ms. Hayes and discovered that many of her views on the world of pageants and the one from which she came, which was helping people develop skills in Fortune 500 companies. What is the difference between Fortune 500 clients and pageant contestants? Mrs. Hayes explains that pageant contestants are more motivated to succeed, are making positive contributions to their world, and generally want to be successful and to help others succeed.

Beauties of America Pageant Begins With Orientation

With 2009 being the 25th anniversary of Beauties of America, the room was decorated in celebratory style.  But the real celebration was the women who would be a part of this hallmark year's pageant.  Orientation was a chance to meet all of the contestants, see old friends and enjoy new acquaintances.  It was a thrill to see Michele Sharpe-Massachusetts 40s whom I had the pleasure of getting to know a couple of years ago.
Sam Britt, North Carolina's 40s was such a doll, and I loved her getting to know her!  There were so many wonderful ladies to get to know throughout the course of the weekend.

Beauties of America Pageant Kicks Off!

The festivities began early as several of the delegates for Beauties of America including my Oregon's 40s buddy and roommate Deanna Bebeau arrived a day before the event began, trying to get a jump on jet lag!  Illinois's 40s queen Siouxzan Moore (center) graciously organized a pre-pageant dinner gathering for us that was fabulous!
After dinner Oregon's delegates (Deanna and I!) headed back to our room for a last bit of rest before the official pageant began.

Well, my intentions to update daily fell by the wayside when computer access became a daily adventure! I wanted to at least share some photos from the week and while I did not win, or place, I did have the opportunity to meet some wonderful ladies, several in particular that I will maintain long-term friendships with I'm sure and to learn a few new things about myself.

Children's Hospital Special Visit

One of the greatest things about being Mrs. Colorado is when a person requests your presence, knowing that it might brighten someones day. My mother and father-in-law have good friends who have a granddaughter, named Hailey, who was attacked by a dog when she was a young child, and was paralyzed from the waist down. Although Hailey leads a very normal life, she still requires surgeries every so often to keep everything in check. She was scheduled for one of her surgeries in August, and it was requested by her grandparents that I make a "special visit" to see her.
I had a wonderful time with Hailey, as we chatted about her involvement in 4-H where she participates riffle shooting and "Decorate Your Duds" (in which she received Grand Champion this year). She will go to the State Fair and compete in both categories in a few weeks, and looks forward to going elk hunting with her family this winter.

Off to Myrtle Beach!!

Well folks, it's that time and as I pack my bags to go to the Beauties of America National Pageant in Myrtle Beach, I would like to take this opportunity to thank my friends and family for their unwavering support.
To my fellow competitors: I can't wait to meet you and look forward to a shared experience. I know that there is only one winner, and for me the experience alone will be well worth the journey.
Best wishes to each competitor and again, thank you to my supporters - without your love and kindness, this just would not be possible.
On a side note, I will do my best to update daily (if possible) - access may be limited but I will give it a try. If you are on Facebook, I will be uploading photos there first.

Insiders Scoop on Miss America Titleholders First Meeting

All of the Miss America 2009 state title holders met for the first time in Orlando, Florida on August 12 since being crowned. The young ladies toured Orlando visiting both Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios theme parks.

With the Miss America pageant roughly 5 months away meeting your competition can have somewhat mixed emotions. On one hand you get the opportunity to meet, get to know and learn from some of the most talented and beautiful girls in the country and then on the other hand you are checking out to see who your competition is.

Pursuing the Miss America crown is different from a state pageant or local in that generally the girls know on a state and local level who the top competitors are. However, when you are entering into the Miss America pageant a whole new pecking order begins. During this first meeting girls are finding out who are the top runners, and how tough their competition really is.

National American Miss girl WINS Miss America's Outstanding Teen

Jeanette Morelan(pictured far left in green, photographed in 2006) will attest that her success in pageantry is because of the experiences and lifelong skills that she gained at National American Miss.
A two-time former NAM Miss Wisconsin ( both the WI Preteen in 2004 WI Jr. Preteen AND 2006 WI Preteen), Jeanette now has a new title to her name - AMERICA'S OUTSTANDING TEEN!!!
The America's Outstanding Teen program is the little sister program for Miss America and is open to teenaged girls. Like Miss America, these teen contestants are required to participate in the physical fitness and talent competition, as well  interview and formal wear. And, like the Miss America oganization, contestants must first win their prelim, where they did advance on to state. State winners then head off to the national competition in hopes of taking home the miniature Miss America Crown( which by the way has pink stones!)

My Last Appearance as America's 50s!

Hi All
Well, it's just a few more days before all the delegates for America's Teens through 50s+ descend upon Myrtle Beach! I am so excited to meet new friends and catch up with old ones. I wish everyone safe travels! I know you are in for the weekend of a lifetime! I am also thrilled to see my sister queens and Jennifer and her family.
Here are photos from my very last appearance as America's 50s. Who doesn't love a parade?! The Moxee Hop Festival in Moxee, Washington is just what America is all about...people celebrating all the great things this country has to offer!
I even had a little fun practicing my crowning technique with the outgoing Moxee royalty! LOL!
I am also pictured with my beautiful daughter, Allison, who is pregnant with my FIFTH! grandchild! I am so incredibly blessed!
It was fun to meet up with Janice Richards, Evergreen State 50s, and share a ride with her in my hubby's fabulous Ford Mustang Convertible!
My best to you all,

It is the high point winner of the pageant. One special queen will be crowned the AMBASSADORIAL QUEEN - High Piont Winner ! The title that all delegates entered into the competition will have an additional chance to win. With the Ambassadorial title comes additional prizes too! Yay! Wow, didn't know that when I was crowned... giggle! Thank You to the judges and staff for helping me understand the gravity of this last, win. The final Who-Rah for me!
Okay that's my take.... as the year progresses, I'll write more. But, this is meant as a pictorial Blog... one last journey! Enjoy.
