MISScellanea: Best of Luck to Ohio's Sweetheart, Becky Minger!

Best of Luck to Ohio's Sweetheart, Becky Minger!

Miss Ohio's First Runner-up, Becky Minger is competing for the title National Sweetheart! Becky is a perfect pageant mix of beauty, talent and relatability. In my opinion...

Here's a press release:

Becky Minger of Sylvania to Represent Ohio at
Miss National Sweetheart Pageant

Becky Minger of Sylvania, this year's 1st Runner-up at Miss Ohio 2008, will represent Ohio at the Miss National Sweetheart Pageant over the Labor Day weekend in Hoopeston, IL. This pageant is unique in the realm of pageants, and enables the first or second runner-up in their State’s preliminary Miss America Pageant, to compete with representatives from approximately thirty other states. The winner is given the title Miss National Sweetheart, receives a $1,000 Scholarship, a $500 U.S. Savings Bond, plus an assortment of gifts. The pageant begins with two nights of Preliminaries on Friday and Saturday, August 29th and 30th, with Top Ten Finals on Sunday, August 31, 2008. Perhaps no major American pageant is so little known to the public as National Sweetheart, but few pageants are so deserving of attention. It's a durable success story, founded on the unselfishness of one small town.

Angela Burns: Beauties of America Pageant

This last Saturday night I had the opportunity to attend the 24th Annual Beauties of America Pageant. It was a wonderful pageant and would suggest this system to anyone of my friends. The winners were beautiful inside and out. I also ran into a very dear friend of mine, Mrs. NY America 2004 Missy Ognibene. She is such a sweetheart and it was so wonderful to see her. I also met the new state director for North Carolina International Joy Pfister who I think is a wonderful person and am looking forward to working with her. Aislinn Carter is someone else that I met is a such a hoot. We laughed almost the entire pageant and she is just so amazing. We actually share the same birthday and live not far away from each other, so I feel bad for the hubby :-) Enjoy the photos and see you all soon.

Meredith Boyd, Mrs. Georgia International 2008: Bone Bash!

What an incredible honor to be the emcee for the Arthritis Foundation's Bone Bash in Atlanta at the Crowne Plaza Ravinia Hotel. It was a costumed affair of spooky creatures, ghosts and goblins, dreadfully silent auctions, witches brew, bone shaking tunes, games and themed contests! The affair was generously sponsored by UCB - the next generation biopharma leader that is making radical breakthroughs with severe diseases like arthritis. This event was a wonderful demonstration on how chapters across the nation of the Arthritis Foundation can take a fun event to be a successful fundraiser for arthritis education, research and outreach programs.

Matt and I are blessed to have been asked to become board members of the Arthritis Foundation Young Professionals group! Thank you to all my friends at the Arthritis Foundation who support my passion and continue to bestow such amazing opportunities to help continue the fight against arthritis.

Miss America 2008 Kirsten Haglund was in Atlanta today to stop by Tony Bowls show room to support him because she wore his gown in her talent portion of her competition. She also signed autographs and took photo ops. It’s like I already know her because I was at her crowning at the Miss America pageant at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas when she won! She is so nice and only 19yrs old wow! She is from Farmington Hills,Mi too. I asked her who was a famous person that she met and she mentioned President Bush. Now that is someone to meet lol. Kirsten said she met Pamela Anderson too, one of my favorites. Her platform is women or young girls with eating disorders because she is a survivor of that. I wish her luck and congrats to her. Palin: From Beauty Pageant to Popular Governor

Susan Davis and June Kronholz report on the presidential race.

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin rocketed on to the national political stage today after John McCain tapped her to run as his running mate against Sens. Barack Obama and Joe Biden.

Palin is a relative unknown, a former Wasilla, Alaska, mayor who has served only two years as governor. She will spend the upcoming days and weeks introducing herself to voters. Here’s something they’ll learn: she is a former Miss Alaska contestant, the Miss America Organization touted today.

In 1984, Palin was chosen Miss Wasilla and went on to become the first runner-up in the Miss Alaska Pageant, but she won Miss Congeniality that year. Her family still holds ties to the pageant—her husband, Todd, was a judge in 2008’s Miss Alaska pageant.

The governor also received praise today from a home state Republican she implicitly criticized in her debut appearance with McCain in Dayton, Ohio. Palin noted that she played a role in killing the “Bridge to Nowhere” a multi-million dollar boondoggle supported by Sen. Ted Stevens and Rep. Don Young that become a national symbol of out-of-control federal spending.

Priest's plans for nun beauty contest canceled - On Deadline - USATODAY.com

Those priestly plans we told you about  to hold an online beauty pageant for nuns have been scrapped,  The Times of London reports.

Father Antonio Rungi, the priest from near Naples who announced the online "Sister Italian 2008" beauty pageant earlier this week, says he got "many" requests from nuns to take part, the newspaper reports. But, he says, he decided to cancel the contest because it has been "misunderstood."

The pageant was due to start on his blog in September, with nun posting photographs -- with head covered or not. Readers would vote on their favorite.

While noting at the time that many younger nuns in Italy were attractive, especially those from Africa and Latin America, Rungi ruled out any bathing suit entries, saying the idea was also to reflect "chaste, inner beauty" and to explain the conduct of religious life in convents.

Rungi, the Times reports, says his plans prompted "too much commotion" -- and a string of abusive emails.

"One of them told me I would end up in Hell," Rungi says.

Hard Rockin' in Myrtle Beach

All morning I visited the Hard Rock Theme Park in Myrtle Beach--already rode Led Zepplin-The Ride three times!

But the big news is tonight I will be joining the lovely contestants of Beauties of America for dinner at the famous Hard Rock Cafe! We'll be taking part of the rock star lifestyle tonight. We hope to have photos up ASAP...

And yes, we will have a live show Saturday but not sure when yet! Stay tuned!

Greetings from Myrtle Beach

After a marathon travel day yesterday, featuring a special layover of five hours and a delayed flight out of Charlotte, I am safe and sound in Myrtle Beach, SC. The weather is not exactly optimal--in fact, why is it that Chicago was less of a "Windy City" than this when I went to the pageant there?

Anyway, we're excited for the gearing up for the "Beauties of America" pageant set to kick off from here today! Stay posted by watching my blog posts here. I might even get a chance to post some pictures if all goes well and sneak in that much bally-hooed live episode from Myrtle Beach!

1978 Coal Queen reflects on reign of royalty

Andrea Patrick Forte was crowned the Pennsylvania Bituminous Coal Queen in Carmichaels 30 years ago.
Andrea Patrick Forte was crowned the Pennsylvania Bituminous Coal Queen in Carmichaels 30 years ago.
When Andrea Patrick tried out for coal queen, representing Laurel Highlands High School, she already had won 15 titles beginning in 1972 with Our Little Miss Uniontown. Prior to that, she and her brother, Rich, danced and competed in dance competitions.

She may have been a veteran pageant contestant, but her role as the 1978 Silver Anniversary Bituminous Coal Queen of Pennsylvania opened up a new door.

"The highlight for me was speaking before the House of Representatives and the state Senate which was the beginning of my career as a spokesperson," Forte said.

Since then, Forte has won the titles of 1980 Miss Pennsylvania USA and 1983 Miss West Virginia. Then she began her own company, Patrick Talent Agency, and married Fabian Forte, teen heartthrob of the 1950s and 1960s before starting a new company - Once Upon A Dream.
