VIDEO: Molly Jean McGrath appearance on the Stimmung Stunde

Molly really saved our program when she came on the "Stimmung Stunde." We were in the middle of changing stations and had I not had this interview set up, I might have walked away from the show...and this all led to meeting Tracy Gest and starting the PageantCast...

VIDEO: Nikki Groppi, Miss St. Francis 2004

Nikki is a delightful guest. She later came on the show to sing "Stille Nacht" for our Christmas program.

FROM the Miss North Carolina's Blog: Miss America Lottery

Miss America is finally becoming a reality! Tonight every contestant participated in the contestant lottery. This process was a mystery to me until this year, as it probably is for many. In case you're curious...

Each contestant logged onto a special web page that showed all of the available placements. There are three preliminary groups labeled Mu, Alpha, and Sigma. Each group contains 17 or 18 placements. A computer randomly chooses states, displaying who is up to choose her slot and who comes next in line. When it is your turn you have five minutes to call the Miss America Organization with your choice.

It was a blast to see everything unfold in real time. Now it is really possible to visualize what the week in Las Vegas will be like. I am in the Sigma group. This means that I will have my interview, swimsuit, and evening gown on Tuesday; talent on Wednesday; and onstage question on Thursday. For a view of the entire line-up, check out the Miss America Web site.

What a fun way to begin the week! I will finish the month of September with another round of school visits (19 schools to be exact) and Mint Hill Madness. September has been a whirlwind of weeks. Between visiting students, attending festivals, and Miss America preparations like the lottery, I have been a busy Miss NC.

Tracy Gest went on to become Miss Wisconsin 2005 and is one of the main reasons the PageantCast exists. I started the 'Cast because I was going out to see Tracy compete at Miss America 2005 in Vegas. Now, we are nearly 100 episodes old and still going.

Ashlei's future holds hopes of becoming an FBI agent.

While the rest of us will spend the next couple weeks going to classes and work, Ashlei Sothard will be hanging out in Mahé in the Seychelles off the east coast of Africa. But she won't be lounging poolside - Sothard will be representing the U.S. in the 36th Annual Miss International Beauty Pageant.

"I was on stage at the Miss Kentuckiana Pageant when they told me I'd been selected to go," she said. "It was really exciting."

One of just 44 contestants from around the world, Sothard, a senior criminal justice major, will spend 10 days posing for photo shoots and strutting her stuff for the Oct. 13 worldwide telecast. But her pageant career is only four years in the making.

"I started competing when I was 17 with the Miss Kentucky Teen USA pageant," Sothard said. "I've been competing ever since."

Sothard has been named Miss Kentucky Teen Model 2003, Miss Kentucky Hawaiian Tropic, Miss Kenton County 2006 and Miss Virginia Hawaiian Tropic 2007. However, she's never been in a pageant that took take her away from home, work and school for three weeks.

Winners Cite Broken Promises in Pageants

When Ashley Wood was crowned Miss South Carolina in 2004, she thought her title came not only with a tiara and a shot at Miss America, but also a $20,000 state scholarship and $5,000 national pageant scholarship.

Clay Spann

Ms. Wood said Miss America scholarship winners “encounter one obstacle after another.”

This fall, Ms. Wood entered the Wharton School, the business-studies arm of the University of Pennsylvania. But she has yet to receive any of that scholarship money, having been locked in a dispute with the Miss South Carolina pageant for more than two years.

“You are talking about an organization that is promoting itself as the largest scholarship provider for women in the world,” Ms. Wood, 26, said of the Miss America Organization. “When contestants try to collect their funds, they encounter one obstacle after another.”

Ms. Wood said she was told that she would not get the $20,000 for winning the Miss South Carolina pageant in part because her two local pageants had not paid her $950 that she had won from them (Ms. Wood said that after she enrolled in classes, one group reneged on payment and the other dodged her when she tried to collect). In turn, because she did not receive the state money, the national pageant sent her a letter in June saying she was ineligible for the $5,000 from it, even though the deadline to use her national scholarship had not passed. “It’s like a game of gotcha,” she said. “What is very clear to me is that the goal is to not give out the scholarships if at all possible.”

Ms. Wood’s is among the most prominent disputes in recent years involving the pageant system, which endures — albeit diminished — since network television dropped the Miss America Pageant in 2004. But there have long been complaints that the 1,200 local and 52 state pageants run under the aegis of the national pageant often do not distribute scholarships to winners. The contestants say their difficulties collecting their money surprise them, given that the Miss America system promotes itself as a scholarship pageant rather than a beauty pageant, unlike its main rival, the Miss USA contest.

Interviews with contestants across the country describe a Miss America system in which local pageant directors do not return telephone calls and e-mail messages for months, local competitions close down before scholarships are distributed, and the fine print in contracts creates hurdles. Local winners across the country have threatened legal action, and some have taken it.

How to Stand Like Miss America

Introduction

Have you watched a pageant and noticed that each girl has a specific way of standing that makes her look long, lean, and polished? This article will show you how to perfect your Miss America stance... not only for a pageant, but for dates, for the beach, even for standing in line at the bank.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You'll Need

Steps

1

Step One

Stand up completely straight. You should feel as though a string is going through your body, through your spine, and out of the top of your head. Throw your shoulders back, puff out your chest, but don't arc your back. Suck in your stomach just enough to make it lie flat (it looks funny when your ribs poke out). You are now in the correct posture. Carry this posture with you when you walk, but practice slipping into this when you stand still.
2

Step Two

Look at your feet. When in the correct stance, one foot should be at 12 o'clock when you are doing your stand. Whichever foot you choose will be your dominant foot, and the one that you step with first when you decide to move. If you choose your left foot to be forward (at 12 o'clock), then your right foot should be at 2 o'clock. If you choose your right foot to be forward (at 12 o'clock), then your left foot should be at 10 o'clock. The heel of your dominant foot (the one that's forward at 12 o'clock) should slip right into the arc of your other foot (the one that's at 2 or 10 o'clock). This will give you the illusion of having only one skinny leg, which will slim your line.
Many people believe you simply stand in first position (in ballet). This is incorrect. You want to tuck one foot and one leg behind the other without looking awkward or uncomfortable. This is how your feet and legs will be when you are in your correct stance.
3

Step Three

Your arms should be relaxed. Make sure they are by your side, straight but not flexed. Your thumbs should be facing forward, not your knuckles. (If your knuckles face forward, then you might look like an ape with dragging hands.) If you decide to put hands on hips, then put then directly in the small of your waist. Only do this if you are committed! It looks weak to have them by your groin, or nearer your thigh... put your hands on your waist only if you can commit!
4

Step Four

Now for the tricky part. Let's say your left foot is your dominant foot (the one at 12 o'clock). As you stand, you will press your left shoulder back, making your waist twist slightly. Keep your hips, legs, feet, and face forward. This slight twist gives your body an extra dimension, slimming your waist and giving more depth to your stand. If your right foot is your dominant, then you will press your right shoulder back. Make sure you keep your hips straight on!

Rachel's Right

Miss USA Rachel Smith has incensed some people by inadvertanly dissing current CBS anchor Katie Couric.

During a recent Women in Entertainment Empowerment Network event last week in New York, when Smith was asked about her future career aspirations she expressed her desire to get into journalism. FYI for your Rachel bashers, she interned last summer in Chicago at Harpo Productions and graduated magne cum laude from Belmont College with a degree in journalism.

She's quoted by the New York Daily News as saying, "I always wanted to be a reporter — maybe some TV. Who knows? Some serious news — but some modeling, too. I just don't want to end up like Katie Couric. I want people to take me seriously."

In response, Couric's rep later told the Daily News: "If she continues to offer such profound insight, she will not have to worry about anyone taking her seriously."
...
Beauty queens aren't taken seriously? Just ask a former Miss Black Tennessee who's now running a media empire worth billions. What's her name again?

First Look at MTV’s “Pageant Place”

by Shea on September 26th, 2007

Pageant PlaceThe New York Daily News got a sneek peek inside MTV’s newest reality show (and guaranteed hit, methinks) Pageant Place. The show premiers October 10th at 10 pm.

From the outside, Apartment 14-B looks like any other midtown apartment - but it’s home to New York’s most beautiful roommates.

The W. 57th St. apartment houses three beauty queens - the reigning Miss USA, Miss Teen USA and Miss Universe.

The News got a first look inside the home of MTV’s new reality show, “Pageant Place,” last week - and found that living with three princesses isn’t always pretty.

Slobby habits can cause ugly scenes, and domestic bliss relies on the roomies pulling their weight.

“I leave my stuff out,” admitted Katie Blair, 2006’s Miss Teen USA. “I don’t put out the trash. It’s disgusting and I don’t touch it.

“[Miss USA] always hated that…. You have to get used to knickknacks, people’s pet peeves. Everyone has their things they worry about and make a big deal over.”

“Pageant Place,” promises to put you upclose and personal with Miss Universe Riyo Mori, Miss USA Rachel Smith and former Miss Teen USA Katie Blair.

FROM the Miss Indiana Blog: A Delay for Hollywood

After anxiously awaiting a schedule from the Miss America Organization on what we would be doing when we go to Hollywood in October, we received a letter stating that the dates for the trip have been changed. Instead of traveling to California from October 12 - 22, we will now be filming the reality series from November 5 - 15. There was good reason though, because TLC wants to make sure they make the most out of this new partnership with the Miss America Organization, and though it will take a little re-arranging of schedules we’re grateful that TLC is so detail oriented and wants to do it correctly. Below is some of the information from the letter as to why the change was made.

It was said that this change was absolutely necessary because, “As you know, TLC was just signed several weeks ago and is quickly hiring and mobilizing their troops to produce both the Reality Show (5 hours of programming to be televised in the weeks before the live Pageant) and getting ready for Las Vegas. They simply have not had enough time to hire a Reality Producer and develop the creative format of the reality show. They indicated to us that they also have a lot at stake in this taping, and want it done CORRECTLY to properly showcase our contestants! They simply need more time. Transportation issues, hotel issues, and the basic logistics also factored into their decision to push this taping back to November.”

I still think this is going to be a fun way to get to know the other contestants before we get into the hectic weeks of rehearsals and competition. It will also give the public an opportunity to get to know the contestants on a more personal level, and hopefully create more interest in watching the pageant finals! So, no matter when we get to Hollywood, I think its going to be a lot of fun!

Thanks for stopping by and keep checking back for more updates!

FROM the Miss Indiana Blog: What a Busy Weekend!

This week’s busiest point came over the weekend with many people to see and places to be. On Friday, I first traveled to Indianapolis to the wonderful store Caché, in the Keystone Fashion Mall, to pick up my lovely wardrobe for the weekend’s events. This included some amazingly comfortable tan pants, a beautiful red sweater, some black dress pants with a glamorous gold chain in the front, to match my red, black, and tan patterned top with a gold snake embellishment.

Then, I headed up to Muncie to the David Letterman Communications Building dedication ceremony. I was hoping to get the chance to meet David Letterman himself, and though I was a ‘special guest’ with a VIP pass for parking and an excellent view of the ceremony, courtesy of the amazing Miss Ball State director Carol Kosisko, I unfortunately didn’t get the chance. I arrived 30 minutes early to join the sea of students and faculty that had come to see the event, and even got some cheers from the crowd myself. However, I had a previous commitment in Anderson that I had to get to by 4:30, and when the ceremony didn’t start on time and then the rain started sprinkling in, I decided it was time to go. Maybe I can send a letter to David though and see if he can get me on the show!
IMG_3237.JPG

Next, I went to the Triple L Youth Ranch in Anderson to speak with some troubled teenage girls. They had never had a Miss Indiana visit, and they were so excited that they even put out a mock red carpet to the entrance and bought me some flowers, how sweet! I spoke to them about overcoming adversity by giving some examples of successful women that had to overcome obstacles of their own. A couple of the examples included; Oprah Winfrey who spent her first 6 years in poverty, had been abused at age 9, and is now the richest African American in the world with the power to influence millions, Helen Keller who became blind and deaf at a young age but still managed to learn to speak in several languages, read Braille, and is famously known for her accomplishments, and the Miss America Organization’s very own Heather Whitestone, Miss America 1995, who despite her hearing impediments learned to dance ballet and won the prestigious Miss America title.
IMG_3239.JPG

I also brought my Miss Ball State crown and sash for the girls to try on and take pictures with, and opened the floor to questions, of which they had many. They asked everything from, “How do you keep your crown on?” to “How can you get up on the stage and compete? And how can we be better prepared for life’s many competitions?” Then we had dinner, which included chicken, dinner rolls, potato salad, and veggies with dip. They even got a cake for the occasion. When asked what the girls learned, I was glad to hear that they learned to be ambitious, believe in themselves, and persevere, because that was the message that I hoped to relay to them. That the only limitations they have are those they put on themselves, and to remember the blessings that they have instead of dwelling on the negative. I ended the evening by singing part of my Miss America talent along with a Carrie Underwood song, by request. It was a unique experience that I’m sure the girls will remember, and I was glad to be there as a positive influence in what seems to them to be a negative world.
IMG_32411.JPG

Finally, I headed to the home of my wonderful interview coaches, Jim and Joy Robbins with Image Improvement, in New Castle to stay for the evening. It was a long day, but a productive one, and I spent part of the evening preparing for my appearance the following day in Richmond.

Saturday morning I drove to Richmond for the “Richmond Walk of Fame.” This was an event that honored famous jazz and blues entertainers that recorded at the Star-Gennett recording studio in 1920’s through the 1950’s. They did this by placing large medallions with the likeness of a record on one side and a tile mosaic picture of the honoree on the other. The featured honoree was Hoagy Carmichael, who recorded songs such as “Georgia on my Mind,” “Up the Lazy River,” and “Stardust.” His son, Randy, was there to perform some of these songs at “The Leland” during lunch too.
IMG_3262.JPG

After lunch we went down to the site of the “Walk of Fame” where they had already placed several inaugural medallions for Gene Autry, Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, and Bix Beiderbecke among others. There was also a life sized bronze sculpture of Hoagy Carmichael that was made by a former student of Indiana University where Hoagy had studied law before entering the music business. The Indiana University Singers were there too, which included Nicole Pollard, Miss Hoosier Heartland 2007.

Then, there was a ribbon cutting ceremony for the unveiling of the medallions, and the entire rest of the day was filled with great jazz and blues music. I even signed autographs in the restored Starr Piano factory. On the way out I left my remaining autographed pictures to be sent in care packages to a group of Marines stationed in Iraq. Then, I was on the road to drive back home to Plymouth after an eventful weekend. Just another day in the life of being Miss Indiana!

Long-time pageant and evening gown designer Sherri Hill prepares for the launch of her premiere dress line for the 2008 prom dress season.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) September 17, 2007 -- Long-time pageant and evening gown designer Sherri Hill prepares for the launch of her premiere dress line for the 2008 prom dress season.

Hill's 2008 prom catalog will be released in late October, but some dress designs and styles are already available on her new Web site. While this season is full of "firsts" for Hill, she has dominated the evening gown market for more than 20 years with her innovative designs. Her gowns have rocked the red carpet on many occasions as well as many beauty pageant competitions.

An August exhibition at the AmericasMart in Atlanta, Georgia gave retailers a sneak peak at Hill's new dress line, brewing excitement and confidence for the 2008 prom season. Dress storeowner Thomas Tolbert cited Sherri Hill as one of the key lines for next prom season with strong talent behind it.

Sherri Hill gowns have been worn by many winning contestants in national beauty pageants including some of the most recent Miss USA winners. The 2007 winner Rachel Smith was crowned wearing a Sherri Hill along with the 2006 Miss USA pageant winner Tara Conner. In 2003, beauty queen Susie Castillo, now MTV Video Jockey and host for Total Request Live, also took the Miss USA crown wearing a Sherri Hill evening gown.

Hill's work has also been a reason to compete for many Miss America competitions. Consecutive winners, Jennifer Berry in 2006 and Lauren Nelson in 2007, were both crowned Miss America in Sherri Hill pageant dresses.

For more information on Sherri Hill designs and to view some dress styles from the 2008 prom dress line, visit www.sherrihill.com.

Miss Ventura County Controversey Gets Gooooood!

Hilary GushwaHilary Gushwa, the Miss Ventura County winner who lost her title after officials learned she was married at the time of the pageant, now claims that the mother of one of the contestants she defeated was behind the investigation to have her taken down. *hissssss!*

Through her attorneys, Gushwa claims that Jackie Youngern, a pageant committee member who is also employed as an Investigative Assistant with the Ventura County District Attorney's Office, used her badge "in an attempt to intimidate witnesses, obtain statements, and solicit clerks at government offices to obtain records." Youngern's daughter also competed for the crown. Craziness!

Ironically enough, when the story first broke, Youngern was quoted by the Ventura County Star, saying, "Only girls that are entitled to it are deserving to own the crown ... This program runs on trust, and she's broken that trust."

Gushwa says the marriage in question was annulled, and that she committed no criminal acts. She claims that she filled out the application for the pageant in August 2004 -- "long before any alleged marriage took place." Yeah, two whole months?! The pageant and marriage took place within weeks of each other in October 2004!
