Miss NZ is in your hands

Just when you thought it was safe to pack away the placards the beauty pageant returns with an all-new twist.

Miss Universe NZ 2007 is offering text voting just like NZ Idol.

That's right, instead of lining up outside the contest venue chanting and making a stand against exploitation you can actually become a beauty contest judge.

How much of an impact the text voters will have on the overall decision isn't revealed, but remember you'll be making your decisions based on a few snapshots and simple bio on the contest website www.missuniversenz.co.nz and can keep track of who is leading the race.

Behind the tiara: A chat with Miss World

By Elizabeth Tinley

Seated on the settee in her Galadari Hotel suite Tatana Kucharova, better known as Miss World 2006, shows no signs of her demanding schedule of international travel and press appearances. In Sri Lanka for a short goodwill tour and to make a guest appearance at last Saturday's Fashion Statement 2007 event, she is a vision of good health and vitality as she settles down to answer the Daily Mirror's questions.

After taking the crown in October at the 56th Miss World Pageant in Warsaw, Poland, the Czech-born blonde still seems genuinely surprised at the accolade. "There were 106 beautiful girls in the competition and I came into it thinking that I just wanted to be there and to experience it and have fun. I never thought it was possible that I would win and I just couldn't believe it, it was indescribable!"

The itinerary of each new Miss World is famously punishing and her manager Marcus Agar mentions with a good-natured chuckle that in a single week she had previously managed to make appearances in America, Europe, Russia and China. It is enough to make even the harshest pageant critics consider the realities of being a beauty Queen.

At only eighteen years old, Tatana is managing to juggle the dual pressures of international humanitarian ambassador and high school student.

Miss USA Talks About Tumultous Reign

There have been 0 comments posted about this story

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Kentucky native Tara Conner plans to stay in New York after her reign as Miss USA ends on March 23.

She might return to her home state to attend the Kentucky Derby, but she won't be sipping any mint juleps, she told the Lexington Herald-Leader in an interview.

"I'm always going to be an alcoholic addict," she said. "It's something I'm going to have to live with. I'm going to have to take actions every day to keep a good, healthy recovery."

Conner endured intense scrutiny after reports she was frequenting New York bars. She underwent drug rehab in Pennsylvania for her drinking.

She said her family will be with her at the upcoming Miss USA pageant in Los Angeles. She may return to Kentucky for a week after the pageant, she said.

She's been on the media circuit, talking about her rehab experience.

"Rehab for me was basically like an awakening," she said. "I had troubles. We all have issues we have to deal with. ... It made me truly appreciate the little things in life, made me truly appreciate my job and the role in this society. It humbled me a lot. It taught me how to be honest. It taught me to be the genuine Tara. I didn't know who she was."

Miss America To Teach Chicago 1st Graders The ABC's Of Alcohol To Prevent Underage Drinking

- Miss America 2006 Jennifer Berry will teach Chicago 1st graders a lesson from Mothers Against Drunk Driving's alcohol use prevention program, Protecting You/Protecting Me on Tuesday, February 27 at Bell Elementary School. State Farm, the national presenting sponsor of Protecting You/Protecting Me, will announce it's donating the "youth-led" program including the curriculum, training and materials to seven elementary schools and seven high schools in Chicago. The lesson by Berry is an example of what high school students will be teaching the younger classes this fall.

Berry, whose platform is "Building Intolerance to Drunk Driving and Underage Drinking," volunteered for five years to implement Protecting You/Protecting Me in Oklahoma schools. Berry knows firsthand the loss of a loved one. Her 15-year-old high school friend was killed in an underage drunk driving crash.

MADD's Protecting You/Protecting Me is the only curriculum of its kind that educates elementary students on the ABC's of alcohol: Alcohol's harmful effects, Brain development and Car safety, including how to stay safe if riding with an alcohol-impaired driver. Implemented in 28 states, Protecting You/Protecting Me is proven effective in helping prevent underage drinking by educating students before they take their first drink of alcohol, which could be as early as age 12. A recent study showed that Chicago had the highest rate of binge drinking among those 12 and older in the top 15 metropolitan areas.

Katie Harman releases ‘Soul of Love’ album

CD will include song she sang at Miss America competition in 2002

By Mara Stine

She first wowed us with her vocals on national television in 2001.

Gresham’s Katie Harman used every inch of her tiny frame to command the Miss America stage, knocking out judges and the competition with her powerhouse operatic voice.

Now Harman, Miss America 2002, is debuting her first album, “Soul of Love.” Nationally released on Feb. 6, Harman calls the album semi-classical.

“It has classical melodies with pop styling,” she says, comparing the crossover mix to those of Josh Groban and Sarah Brightman.

Harman, 26, who grew up in Gresham and graduated from Centennial High School, will perform selections from her album at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, at the Lawrence Gallery, 903 N.W. Davis St., in downtown Portland’s Pearl District. A reception begins at 6 p.m. Both are free.

Tiaras traded for TV spot

SHE might not have been crowned Miss Universe, but Australia's last competitor for the title is, nevertheless, following in the footsteps of Jennifer Hawkins.

Brisbane-bred model Erin McNaught has traded swimsuits and tiaras for TV hosting and wild stunts in her latest gig, presenting Channel 10's technology show Cybershack.

McNaught is quick to admit the job is more "challenging" than she initially thought. Rather than sitting behind a television playing the latest video games, the show's producers have had her in the field re-enacting the game's content in the real world.

"I've filmed three or four episodes for series two so far and I've played beach volleyball with the Dutch national team and driven a V8 buggy on a motocross track," she says.

McNaught, who was nearly eliminated from the Miss Universe contest after topless photos of her emerged, says she had never imagined she'd host a TV show, but fell into the role after returning from the US pageant.

"The Departed" Siren Stalked by FBI Imposter

On Friday February 16th at about 8:15 am, a man posing as an FBI agent and flashing a fake badge went uninvited to the Manhattan condominium residence of Former Miss USA(World) and “The Departed” actress Sallie Toussaint.

Witnesses described the FBI imposter as dressed in blue jeans, light colored sweater and an olive down coat. He also had a receding hairline, stood about 5feet 9 inches, weighed about 160 pounds, and appeared to be Asian American with a definite American accent.

The stalker asked the doorman of the actress if she lives there and with whom, her
whereabouts and other very personal questions. The doorman asked for a business card. The refused and eventually exited the building after several minutes of trying to intimidate the doorman out of more information. He was also carrying a folder with several photos of Sallie Toussaint which appeared to be printed from the internet. A male has been calling the front desk of the young lady’s building several times a day and asking for her apartment number ever since this bizarre visit from this stalker. It appears to be the same male in question. The actress and former Miss USA and her family do not recognize this man and need your help. Federal and State charges have been filed against this man. He is being charged with impersonating a Federal Agent, Aggravated Harassment and Trespassing. If anyone recognizes and has any information on the man shown in this video, please contact 1-800-577-TIPS.

FORMER MISS USA FROM IDAHO FALLS

Monday Feb 19, 2007

This year is the tenth anniversary of an Idaho Falls woman making history. Brandi Sherwood, a graduate of Idaho Falls High School, gained national prominence in 1997 when she was crowned Miss USA. Eight years prior to that, in 1989, she was crowned Miss Teen USA. She is the only woman ever to hold both titles. Brandi, who is currently a model and actress in Los Angeles, says the best part of her fame is being able to have a voice in what she believes in.

Brandi Sherwood, Miss USA 1997: "Being that I don't drink, don't smoke or do drugs, both when I was Miss Teen USA and Miss USA, I spoke on behalf of the DARE organization. I've gone to different schools in different places, all age groups, little kids up to kids in high school."

'The Departed' wins best picture - Yahoo! News

'The Departed' wins best picture - Yahoo! News: "'Little Miss Sunshine' also won the original screenplay Oscar for first-time screenwriter Michael Arndt.

The film follows a ghastly but hilarious road trip by an emotionally messed-up family rushing to get their darling girl (10-year-old supporting-actress nominee Abigail Breslin) to her beauty pageant.

'When I was a kid, my family drove 600 miles in a VW bus with a broken clutch,' Arndt said, describing a road trip that mirrored the one in the film. 'It ended up being one of the funnest things we did together.'"

'The Departed' wins best picture - Yahoo! News: "Arkin played a foul-mouthed grandpa with a taste for heroin 'Little Miss Sunshine,' a low-budget film that came out of the independent world to become a commercial hit and major awards player.

'More than anything, I'm deeply moved by the open-hearted appreciation our small film has received, which in these fragmented times speaks so openly of the possibility of innocence, growth and connection,' said Arkin."

Miss Illinois Galaxy

Yesterday, I was one of the three judges for Miss Illinois Galaxy (which included Miss, Teen and Mrs. divisions) and it was a really difficult job! All the delegates were fantastic! (Not to mention 12 inches of snow fell on the ground making the drive back rather--adventurous.)

Our new Miss Teen Illinois Galaxy is Jenna Chaney.

Our new Miss Illinois Galaxy is Stephanie Daughenbaugh.

Our new Mrs. Illinois Galaxy is Michelle Lose.

Special thanks to director Britt Harrison and all the organizers of the event for making the judging experience, while difficult, a lot of fun!

Ugly Betty star poses nude

Vanessa Williams is about to reveal all in a photoshoot for Allure magazine

Ugly Betty star Vanessa Williams is due to reveal all in a photoshoot for America's Allure magazine.

Vanessa famously had to return her Miss America beauty crown, which she won in 1984, after nude pictures of her appeared in Penthouse magazine.

Apparently the 43-year-old actress, who plays the diva fashion magazine boss Wilhelmina Slater in the hit US sitcom, is prepared to strip off again for Allure's Look Better Naked issue, which goes on sale in America in May.

At the time that Vanessa was caught up in the Penthouse scandal it seemed like her career in show business was over. But she landed a record deal and had a string of hits before turning to film and television.

Wanted, Ms Sweden

Posted online: Friday, February 23, 2007 at 0000 hours IST
STOCKHOLM, FEB 22: Miss Sweden, the title that has reaped three No 1’s in the global Miss Universe contest, is up for grabs...on the country’s jobseeker site, organisers said on Wednesday.

The job, advertised under “Search for New Miss Sweden,” is posted on the Swedish employment service agency and welcomes applications from inspirational, intelligent Swedish women with good English and communication skills. No previous employment history is required and it promises a fixed salary that will be determined by qualifications. “Your primary work task will be to communicate a positive picture of modern Sweden, but you will also be required to clearly and consequently work to promote the core values of the new Miss Sweden,” the job ad said.

Panos Papadopoulos, spokesman for “New Miss Sweden” said that “this is an ordinary job. We advertise for it just like you would do for any other job when you are looking for the right people with the right qualifications.”

“This is nothing like the old Miss Sweden anymore, it’s not a beauty pageant, it’s a job or a talent quest,” Papadopoulos said, adding that the former contest was changed to reflect the modern values of Swedish youth.

‘MISS AMERICA’ CONTESTANT PROMOTES MODESTY

The Miss America Pageant, a decades-old tradition in American culture, continues to push the envelope in order to grab coveted viewers who have been tuning out the broadcast in recent years.

The parade of bodies has become so risqué that this year Miss Utah, Katie Millar, decided to take a stand for modesty by choosing to wear a less revealing evening gown and a one-piece swimsuit. And she finished in the Top 10, despite some criticism from her fellow contestants.

“My message as Miss Utah expands beyond just the pageant world,” Millar told the Daily Herald in her hometown of Highland, Utah. “I hope that I am an example to all young women that you can uphold traditional values and be successful at the same time.”

Mary Mohler, whose husband R. Albert Mohler Jr. is president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., was pleased with Millar’s decision to not give in to pressure about what she should wear.

“While the issues behind why one would enter a pageant like this anyway are certainly up for debate, I think Katie Millar is to be commended for her brave stand for modesty in the Miss America Pageant,” Mohler, who has led workshops on modesty, said in a statement to Baptist Press. “Her swimsuit clearly stood out among the others as modest but was certainly stylish and feminine as well. Her evening gown was elegant in every way but did not cross the line that the vast majority of her contenders did.

ABC reveals the identities of 'Dancing with the Stars 4' celebrities

By Christopher Rocchio and Steve Rogers, 02/21/2007
ABC has revealed the identities of the 11 celebrities who will be waltzing their way into primetime when the fourth season of Dancing with the Stars premieres with a special two-hour episode on Monday, March 19 at 8PM ET/PT.

The network has billed the cast for Dancing with the Stars' fourth installment as the reality competition series "most diverse cast to date," as it features three athletes, two singers, a former Miss USA, a talk-show personality, a United Nations ambassador, two actors and a supermodel. Their identities were revealed by former Dancing with the Stars 3 contestant Jerry Springer during Tuesday morning's broadcast of ABC's Good Morning America.

In addition to former N Sync singer Joey Fatone (who had publicly announced that he'd like to appear on the show's next edition way back in December), Dancing with the Stars's fourth season cast will include country singer Billy Ray Cyrus; former Beverly Hills 90210 star Ian Ziering; Muhammad Ali's daughter Laila Ali; soon-to-be former Paul McCartney wife Heather Mills; former NBA star Clyde "The Glide" Drexler; 2004 Miss USA winner Shandi Finnessey; former Entertainment Tonight, Extra and Leeza host Leeza Gibbons; two-time Olympic gold medalist speed skater Apolo Anton Ohno; The Sopranos actor Vincent Pastore; and supermodel Paulina Porizkova.

Vanessa Williams to pose nude again…this time, she’ll get to keep her job

Back in 1984, the Chappaqua beauty lost her Miss America crown after Penthouse printed photos of her posing nude and performing sexual acts with other women. 23 years later the actress, who’s 43, is ready to do it again (minus the lesbian thing). The Ugly Betty star will pose for Allure Magazine’s May “Look Better Naked” issue, according to the New York Post. The paper reports that Williams was “completely unclothed for the shoot at Lux Studio.”
